I was going through the camera and found this photo of a GORCHEST gold barb! Not sure who took it. Either Alanna or Charlie. Who took it? Good job. A+. Heck I’ll give it a ✅➕! Gold Star ⭐️ even. Standing ovation! Round of applause! 👍! Ok! Decent! But for real let me know who took this photo thanks.

MSMHS in The Keys: Day 3

We end our trip with a stop at the lab where took valuable time out of his day to show us around. Coral Morphologic does an amazing job mixing coral science, conservation, art and education.

The lab was amazing. Tanks were packed full with corals from all over the world. Colin and his team work incredibly hard and you could see it in the tanks as the corals were growing up the glass and to the surface of the water.

One of the highlights was the native coral lab. There they are growing native species which will hopefully be out planted soon in the Port of Miami. Be sure to follow along on their journey as there are so many cool projects on the horizon. Also, check out the which is a live feed in the Port of Miami. You will see some amazing fish and corals there

MSMHS in the Keys: Day 2

Today we traveled to Islamorado to visit our friend at the . At their coral nursery, they are focused on growing native Atlantic corals that will be eventually be planted out in the ocean.

Justin and the team showed us some new techniques they are trying to encourage faster growth, ways they are trying to make corals more resilient and we also talked about the challenges of working with species that are in such dire condition in the wild. Additionally, we discussed ways that might be able to support their efforts by running similar experiments in our lab in Connecticut.

Their work was truly inspiring and gave us hope to the future of Atlantic reefs. If you want to support their efforts, be sure to check out their social media pages. Stay tuned for more....

MSMHS in the Keys: Day 1

Our mission, to find and learn about coral restoration from the experts. Today we visited the . The owner, Jamie, took valuable time out of his day to meet with our team.

We discussed the aquarium hobby, how to best train the next generation of aquarists, and the differences between aquaculture and mariculture corals.

His shop is beautiful, the tank are immaculate, and his passion for the hobby was infectious. The Florida Keys are lucky to have him and this is a relationship that we will continue to grow!

Somebody name this thing! It’s a Pictus anglerfish, aka Painted Frogfish, aka poutpout fish! Its favorite activities are eating, biting the feeding tongs, sitting motionless and rolling around after eating too much. It can’t swim and its only friends are snails. Life really can be this simple 😎🤙

It was great to host our friends from aquaculture program. They got a tour of our facility, talked with students about aquarium science and learned how to frag corals with Mr. L......and they got to go home with a bunch of for their own system!

Not on purpose, but really freaking cool....

A new color was expressed onto this coral. What was an all red polyp bubble gum digitata is now expressing green fluorescent proteins after being next to a green digitata. Why did this happen....to be honest we are not sure.

We started a quest to learn more. We asked ChatGPT and it told us that no one was studying things like this. We talked to Dr. Fritz and he was stumped as well. We reached out to the coral mad scientist, and he recommended we look into thraustochytrids. Ummmm....what the heck is that!?!?

Anyone else have an experience like this? Who has seen this before and might have an explanation? We will try to grow it out and see if the colors are expressed even more. Stay tuned.

Progress pictures are the best! 📸 🪸 😎

Sometimes it feels like a broken record to say, but it's important to remind ourselves that growth takes time. It's hard to see when we stare at our tanks everyday, but taking pictures allows us to really appreciate what's happening under the water. This Purple Plasma has really taken off under the Meridian.

So get out your camera or cellphone and start snapping some pics
