Happy Thanksgiving week to everyone. Here are a few good tips for keeping your fur babies safe for the holidays. Nothing smells better than all the delicious foods simmering, but certain foods that make the holiday special can be dangerous for our pets. Turkey, turkey skin and bones are food items that our pets find hard to resist but cannot easily digest and can lead to pancreatitis. Heathy foods for humans but extremely toxic to pets include onions, raisins, grapes, and mushrooms. Any dessert type foods items should never be given to pets. Chocolate or artificial sweeteners will be dangerous if eaten. Keeping these tempting foods out of sight and smell may be inconvenient but necessary. Hope everyone has a safe and Happy Thanksgiving We will be closed on Thursday and Friday this week. We also have gift certificates available.

With this gorgeous fall weather arriving a lot of our clients start thinking about hunting season with their fury friend. We thought we would make a post to help you and your pet have a safe hunting trip. First starts with getting your dog in condition prior to the start of the season. Overweight unconditioned dogs are not only more prone to sprains but heat exhaustion as well. Minnesota fall weather brings us sudden weather changes with cool weather in the mornings and possible hot muggy weather by noon. Swamps, streams, or ponds during this season can contain blue green algae that can be toxic to drink. Bringing fresh water and electrolytes along for you and your pet will provide a clean drinking source and keeps all parties well hydrated. Other potential toxic or poisonous items that should be avoided are mushrooms, clay pigeons, or lead bullets. Younger dogs may find these items fun to chew on but can be extremely toxic if ingested. Poison control number along with your vets number stored in your phone are also good ideas. Break away collars, micro chipping, and protective safety vests are also recommended. Keeping you and your pet visible to other hunters in your area can help prevent a potential accident. Other ideas can include writing your phone number on your dogs collar, making sure id tags are secure or using a gps collar to help find your best friend in the event you lose each other. The last thing we want to mention is after the hunt to give your dog a good once over. Locating a cut or scrape underneath an armpit or between the legs early, can keep potential infections at bay and keep you both out hunting longer. Happy hunting and have a safe season.

Happy Monday Everyone. With this cooler weather coming we have had a lot of questions on how long to continue Heartgard and tick preventatives. Our general rule is to give flea and tick preventative through November or after a hard freeze. For those that treat heartworm throughout the entire year, we suggest testing every 2 years. Seasonal heartworm prevention requires yearly testing. Looking at our upcoming schedule, we do have a few openings for neuters, spays, or dental cleanings that your pet may need. Again if you have any questions about your pets health please feel free to call us. Our number is 320-285-2468

Happy hot Wednesday everyone. We wanted to take the time to mention a few pointers on how to keep your pet cool in this weather. Fresh cool water in different areas is a good idea, even adding ice cubes is fun. Animals need a quiet shady place with good ventilation to beat the heat. Under trees, shrubs, or in the house with the ac running are good options. Avoid activity/exercise during mid day heat to prevent a heat stroke. While its temping to bring your pet for a quick car ride to the store, its important to remember how quick temperatures in vehicles can rise. Symptoms of heat stroke include: excessive panting, reddened gums, drooling, agitation or lethargy. A pet showing these signs would need vet intervention immediately. Your pets health and happiness is our main goal. Lets have a safe and cool summer.😎
