Food for thought š āITāS FINE MY DOG IS FRIENDLYā
As a dog owner do you ever stop and think, āhey this person may not want my dog in their bubbleā š¤
The other day, I had my two dogs off leash in a public green space. Rounding a corner, I saw a father with his little girl in the sand box. My dogs are friendly and will seize just about any opportunity to receive affection from people, even if itās uninvited.
Once my dogs spotted the family, they bee lined it for them. I gave them the ānoā command and they stopped. I asked the father if they were ok with dogs. He looked a little surprised for a split second, as if no one had ever asked permission for their dogs to say hi to them. He responded āgreat question! We love dogsā With consent from the father, I allowed my dogs to interact with them.
As a trainer, I always coach clients and owners to be selective with who they allow their dogs to engage with. Clients usually have a fair understanding by the end of training, that itās not necessary for your dog to greet or play with other dogs that they will not having an ongoing relationship with.
But what about the humans? Just because our dogs are friendly and enjoy social interaction with other humans, doesnāt mean that itās reciprocated from strangers.
Someone very close to me, recently had a horrible and terrifying experience with her young puppy and three large dogs who were off leash. Those three dogs attacked her puppy, trying to keep her pup safe, she found herself in the middle of an explosive dog attack. Thankfully, she only had minor injuries, unfortunately the same can not be said for her puppy. Because of this horrid event, she now will tense and freeze up around large dogs and doesnāt appreciate when they invade her personal space.
Some people are terrified of dogs, it could be that they had a bad experience with a dog(s), they never grew up with dogs and are apprehensive, or it could be as simple as they just donāt like dogs (which, is no friend of ours š)
Regardless of the reason; we should be respectful and not just allow our dogs to run up to strangers without permission first.
