Responsible breeders work to preserve the health, temperament, and structure of their breed for future generations! For this reason, we prioritize transparency regarding the genetic health testing we perform on our dogs at Barcelona.
One especially important test in the basset is for Mucopolysaccharidosis I (MPS I), an inherited disease that is characterized by insufficient production of the alpha-L-iduronidase enzyme. This enzyme is responsible for breaking down glycosaminoglycans in the body, and without it, the accumulation of these sugars causes harm, like skeletal deformities. This is especially dangerous in a dwarf breed, such as the basset.
MPS I is an autosomal recessive disorder, meaning carriers appear completely normal and do not exhibit symptoms. Therefore, genetic testing of parents prior to breeding is key to make sure carriers aren’t being bred to other carriers.
All of us at Barcelona Basset Hounds are especially excited to report the recent 🧬MPS I CLEAR🧬 results received for 🏎️LARSON🏎️ and 🍏GOLDIE🍏 . We are hoping for a litter out of this special pair later this year, pending the remainder of their clearances. More details to come, but feel free to contact us here on Facebook, or email Cassidy at [email protected] to inquire about our puppy placements. We look forward to hearing from you! ☺️
