We were out for a leisurely ride tonight, but Scout kept racking past Bailey and trying to leave him behind. That’s a problem.

In this clip, Scott is working Scout by moving his feet while he’s out front. He’s letting him rack, but he’s adding lots of changes of direction. Then he moves Scout to the back and offers a quiet walk in a straight line.

Why? It’s important to teach the horse that racking ahead without permission equals added pressure, but walking as cued equals a release of pressure.

After several rounds, Scout settled back into a relaxed walk. Bailey was never worried a bit.

Thank you!

Scout will splash all the water out of a water trough in the summer heat, so it makes sense that he’d play in the training trench when it’s full of water.

Nope. I lunged him for a few minutes to get him wet, and then I took his halter off. He waited around to see if I was going to do anything else, and then he headed back to the barn to join his friends.

What a wonderful day this has been! I can’t wait to see pictures of Blanche as she continues her training at home.

Blanche was chewing on the arena rails, and Scott suggested I rub Irish Spring on them. Turns out it’s a pretty good deterrent. She left them alone after getting soap in her mouth.

Blanche is ready for the trails. I really get to know a horse’s personality over the course of six weeks. I’m going to miss her.

We took Blanche out to meet some of the neighbors during today’s training-on-the-trail session. She did great.

Blanche and I are practicing “distracted” mounting.

I want her to focus on me, not the horse walking around and not the horse whinnying in the next pasture.

If I ask her to move, adjust the saddle, stretch out her front legs, flex her side to side, slap the saddle, or flap the stirrup, I want her to stay focussed on me.

If I go to mount and it’s a sloppy mount, a partial mount, or a change-my-mind and dismount, I want her to remain calm and unconcerned.

Once I mount, I want her to stand, flex, let me rub on her… without worrying about what the other horses are doing.

And most importantly, I want her to wait until I cue her to walk before moving off.

Blanche has progressed from being fearful of getting her feet wet to confidently trotting through the water.
