Today was a difficult day. We said goodbye to Boone this afternoon after 14 years of love and adventure. To say that Boone was a good boy is really an understatement. He was smart as a whip. He knew the names of at least five different cow toys (as well as the rest of his stuffies) and could fetch them from the toy box by name. When he lost his hearing he knew hand signals and sometimes I swore he could read lips. The most handsome and adorable puppy grew into an equally strikingly adorable boy. He knew it too and the ladies loved him! He was calm and relaxed in any environment and “came with” almost everywhere I went. He wasn’t much of a snuggler (he left that to his sister Jezebel who passed 1/10/2026) but he would occasionally bestow triplets of kisses. Always in denominations of three. It is the magic number. I got the last 3 this afternoon after a several week drought. The memory will stay with me forever. He loved the mud and to “shark” in the water. Chasing white tails and turkeys were his favorite modes of exercise if he wasn’t to be found exactly 1’ foot behind my right heel. He was porcupined and skunked in his youth but seemed to figure out what not to chase. He never caught a squirrel (that was Jezebel) but did manage a couple bunnies and a baby turkey. He loved to tuck his nose under his paw when he slept and “fuzz bomb” on the couch to scratch his back. He remained stuffed animal soft despite the time between baths which he loathed. He was the best dog I’ve ever known and I’ve known and loved many. He took a massive chunk of my heart with him and though I know I will one day have another dog there will never be another Boone. My copilot and heart. May the puppies stay forever young in the hereafter and I will count the days until we are reunited.
