☀️ Summer begins today — and a major heat wave is right behind it. ⚠️

From overheating and sunburn to dehydration and heatstroke, extreme temperatures can be life-threatening for both dogs and cats.

This quick guide shares simple steps to help keep your dog safe in the summer heat. While it's especially important for brachycephalic breeds, dogs with dark coats, and those with underlying health conditions, high temperatures pose a risk to all dogs.

The safest place for your pet during extreme heat is indoors, ideally with air conditioning.

Far too often, well-meaning people will find a fawn left unattended and will assume it is an orphan. This usually ends tragically, when the fawn dies of stress in human care and the mother is left grieving her missing baby.

It’s very normal for fawns to be left unattended! When a doe needs to forage safely during the day, she will urge her fawn to lie very still and very quiet, so it stays undetected by predators. Most of the time, the fawn needs to be left exactly where it was found.

Believe it or not, this is just as true for fawns found beside roads as it is for fawns found in the forest. Many does will choose a ditch or shoulder as the place to leave their fawns. Although it looks like a scary choice to an onlooker, the fawn isn’t likely to get hit: it will stay completely still until its mother returns, and the presence of nearby traffic may even help to keep curious predators from getting too close.

This particular fawn was photographed in Wisconsin. Its mother was visible watching from nearby and came to reclaim her baby as soon as humans were out of sight.

Please do your part to keep fawns safe. Leave them where they are unless you see the mother’s body nearby or see clear signs that the fawn is starving, dehydrated, or distressed.

Wildlife is feeling the heat too! ☀️🦡🦊🦔🦆

As temperatures rise across the UK, please remember our wild neighbours are struggling to stay cool and hydrated.

Put out shallow dishes of clean water in shady spots around your garden or balcony. Add a few pebbles or stones in the bowl, this gives bees, insects, and small mammals a safe way to drink without falling in or drowning.

If you have a pond, make sure there are escape routes, like gently sloped edges or stones for animals that might fall in.

Change the water daily if you can, especially in hot weather, to keep it clean and fresh. Even the smallest gesture makes a big difference. A simple bowl of water could be a lifesaver. Let’s look after our local wildlife, they’ll thank you in their own quiet way.

DON'T FORGET! With the heat wave on the way, you CANNOT leave your pets unattended in the car. Cracking the windows does not help the situation. Within a short amount of time, the inside of your vehicle will heat to a level that becomes dangerous and even deadly.

How handsome is Desmond!?!?!? He is new to Stamford Animal Control and ready to be someone’s BFF!!! ❤

This sweet boy is approximately 5 years old and looking for his forever home. Desmond is looking for a home with an experienced owner. He is overall a sweet boy but will benefit from training. We would recommend walking Desmond with a harness being that he pulls on leash. Desmond is a smart boy, he knows sit and is super food/treat motivated. ❤

Got questions. Want to know more about Desmond? Just email the Stamford shelter at [email protected] or call them at (203) 977-4437.

If you are interested in adopting Desmond please reach out or stop by the Stamford Shelter located at 201 Magee Ave.
