RSP Maternal Incubation Update:
‘Regret’ in herpetoculture is spelled: “M.I.”
Today is day 75 for these eggs- my average incubation time has been 63 days forrough scaled pythons. I had hoped it was just taking a bit longer- however today the top egg had a slit in it, I’m not sure if it was a pip or just a rip. I removed the female and cut the eggs open. There were 11 eggs total, at least 9 of which were fertile. Two eggs (the ones on the top of the clutch) were completely developed, three eggs toward the bottom died early in development and the four on the second level of the clutch died before their pigment came in- which is pretty far into development. So I don’t believe this was a case where they couldn’t get out of the eggs on their own- I think the environmental factors were not sufficient to allow their development.
My initial feeling is that it was too cool. The data logger on the lid of the lay box reported an average temp of 83 degrees. With a low of 79 and a high of 89. I did not witness the female shivering or twitching like you see some pythons do.
The average humidity was in the low 70’s. I think either one of these factors could have been overcome with success, but possibly not both at the same time.
The title of this post is a bit tongue in cheek. While yes, I would have loved to have a second clutch of roughies this year hatch, I was happy to watch this female perform her duties and learn something in the process. And the risk of losing the eggs was worth the elation I would have experienced seeing them emerge from her coils.
