One thing we see a lot in rescue is returns and surrenders. Cats being "sent back" because they were hiding, hissing at hands trying to pet, refusing bowls of food, maybe peeing where they shouldn't. What do we wish every time? We wish those cats just had a little more time...
Have you ever heard of the 3-3-3 rule?
3-3-3 is a guideline to use when adopting or fostering a new pet. Three days to decompress, three weeks to let their walls down, and three months to feel truly comfortable.
Understanding this timeline can make a huge difference for not only new pet parents but cats too! Setting expectations ensures everyone wins.
The first 3 days, many cats feel overwhelmed by their new environment. They may hide more, eat less or avoid you. Give them a quiet place to decompress and limit noise.οΏ½Let them approach you when ready.
In 3 weeks, your cat starts understanding that the environment is safe. You may see more exploring, playing, grooming, and personality emerging. Offer consistent routines and introduce new spaces gradually.
In 3 months, your cat may be more confident, affectionate and relaxed. Their personality will be blossoming. Continue building trust, providing enrichment, and maintaining predictable routines.
Really what most kitties need is time.
Time to adjust, time to heal, time to trust.
The cat you meet on Day 1 could be a thriving, social butterfly by day 90!
Itβs important to remember that every cat is unique. While the 3-3-3 rule is a general guideline, your cat may have their own timeline. Be patient, meet them where they are at - it's worth it we promise. π
