Even if your cat is an indoor cat, testing for FIV and FeLV is a good idea. These are immune system disorders that can be dormant and can also be transmitted to other cats in your household.

Because overeating can lead to colic, keep these tips in mind: avoid leaving horses in pastures too long, or unattended, with tempting foods sources like fruit trees, and be sure to lock-up feed and monitor how much grain is offered at feeding time.

While senior cats may develop painful arthritic conditions, pet owners today can use effective remedies which will slow the progression of feline arthritis, like nutritional supplements, medications, and lifestyle changes.

According to the BBC, the oldest parrot on record is a Blue and Gold Macaw named Charlie. Charlie is reported to have been owned by Winston Churchill, and is believed to be over 105 years old.

Heartworm is a disease caused by parasitic worms that live in the lungs and arteries of your pet, along with a number of other mammals. Pets in every state in the country have come down with heartworms, though the condition is most prevalent in the South and Southeastern parts of the country.

Make sure your cat has something to scratch. If your cat is tearing up the furniture, you’ll need a more appropriate location to divert them to. Scratching posts are great, but you can also provide a piece of carpet, as most cats love the texture of the backside of rugs.

Birds make wonderful pets and can be very affectionate. If it is important to get a bird that is likely to talk, experts say the African Grey parrot is generally considered the smartest of all talking birds. However, don’t underestimate the common pet parakeet. They are capable of learning up to 500 words, and sentences.

If your cat is having trouble urinating, you need to have him or her examined by a vet. Feline urinary tract infections are common, particularly in male cats, and need to be treated. Trouble defecating could indicate a digestive block.

Equine veterinarians treat injuries, diagnose and treat diseases, provide vaccinations, and perform surgery on horses. We're also frequently consulted by horse owners on topics such as improving performance, diet, breeding, and stabling.

Even exotic vets may specialize in different types of cases. There are exotic specialists who love reptiles, while others work strictly with mammals. And either of those may choose to specialize in emergency services or more typical cases.

The homeopathic consultation process is more complex than the usual veterinary consultation, and this is because a homeopathic vet looks at the whole picture, not just the present symptoms. The vet may ask you details of the pet’s background, lifestyle, environment, demeanor, likes, dislikes, etc.

If your cat frequently sneezes, has a runny nose, crusty eyes or crusty nostrils, it could be a sign of a cold. Routine vaccinations should keep your cat from getting sick. If not, your kitty friend may be more susceptible to feline viruses.

Exotic birds who are hand raised need human attention, even developing emotional and behavioral issues if they do not receive sufficient mental stimulation. In fact, some experts recommend that some exotic birds be allowed to interact with their human family for several hours each day.

Before a vet visit, get your bird used to the carrier. Start by keeping the carrier nearby and letting your bird explore, gradually increasing the time spent in the carrier. Make sure to offer treats and praise as a reward!

Puppies are born blind, deaf, and toothless. The first sense that they develop is touch. A dog’s entire body, including their paws, is covered with touch sensitive nerve endings. They can also hear sounds four times farther away than a human can.

Do you know that different types of birds react differently to certain medical procedures? Be sure to choose an avian vet that is not only generally knowledgeable about pets but also experienced in specific treatments for your bird.

Remember, your pet cannot talk so vets rely heavily on the signs and symptoms that you tell them about. Nothing makes for more miscommunication and frustration than one member of the family noticing a problem and a different, uninformed member of the family presenting the pet.

Did you know that you should never, under any circumstance, give your pet people medication? Even ibuprofen or aspirin can kill your pet. If you think that your pet is sick, take him or her to the vet rather than trying to medicate yourself.

Exotic birds tend to be noisy. Ignoring their screeching and rewarding them when they are quiet are the best ways in which to neutralize noisy behavior. You should reward your bird often for good behavior by giving your bird food, affection, and conversation.

It's important to keep potentially harmful plants, foods, or medicines away from your cat. But if something toxic is ingested, make sure you know how to respond quickly. Call your veterinarian's emergency number or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435.

There’s no reason that a holistic health care plan for your animal cannot run alongside prescription medicine if necessary. You can continue to give any prescription medicines exactly as directed by your veterinarian following a holistic therapy.

Bearded dragons undergo a hibernation-like state called brumation, where they sleep more and eat less or even stop eating altogether. Have your vet check your bearded dragon for other issues, but if your bearded dragon is healthy, don’t be alarmed by this.

Prophylactic periodontal treatment is necessary for your pet, so that he or she can keep his or her teeth. In fact, bacteria allowed to build up over time, especially below the gum line, can cause your pet to experience bleeding gums, bad breath, inflamed or receding gums, and teeth loosening—and eventual tooth loss.

Treating vomiting in dogs depends on what's causing a dog's distress, and may include fluid therapy, drugs to control vomiting, and homemade foods like well-cooked skinless chicken, boiled potatoes, and rice.

Choosing a vet is not just about your pet’s annual check- ups. It is important to choose a vet who is also experienced in a variety of the situations that may come up as the pet ages or in case they may have issues that develop.

Of dogs and cats, which pet has been domesticated longest? If you guessed that cats have been domesticate longest, guess again. Cats have been kept in human communities for an estimated 7,000 years. It's double that for dogs. Canines (or mammals similar to canines) began keeping company with humans more than 14,000 years ago.

If you are planning on travelling, you may have to board your animal. Choosing a facility that is clean and odor-free, allows your pet exercise, and offers daily activities will help ensure your pet enjoys his home away from home. It will also give you piece of mind knowing your furry friend is well taken care of until you return.

Check out what happens at your vet’s in an emergency. Does the practice offer emergency services out of office hours? If not, learn where the emergency hospital they use is located. Occasionally, there are those situations where every moment is precious.
