🎉 We are incredibly proud to share that the Humane Society of Eastern Carolina received a plaque from Best Friends Animal Society recognizing our over 90% save rate for the 2024 calendar year! 🎉

This is an honor that reflects the hard work, dedication, and love poured into every life we’re able to save. While we’re proud to celebrate this achievement, it’s important to remind everyone of the realities many shelters and rescues still face.

HSEC is a private rescue. Every animal in our care was chosen for our adoption program. We are very lucky that we do not have to euthanize for space. But your local county shelters do not have that same privilege. Many are overwhelmed, under-resourced, and forced to make heartbreaking decisions every single day.

We will not tolerate bashing of shelters that weren’t able to reach a 90% save rate. Every shelter and rescue is fighting the same fight trying to save lives in a world where there are simply too many animals and not enough space.

Let’s be clear:
🚫 Shelters and rescues are FULL.
🚫 Animals are still being abandoned, surrendered, or born from “accidental” litters.
🚫 Lost pets arrive daily, hoping their owners come for them — many never do.
When a new animal needs a spot, space doesn’t magically appear. Something or someone has to make room. That’s the heartbreaking math shelters are left with.

When someone brings in a stray or surrenders a pet, ask yourself: where is that animal going to go if there’s no open space? New walls don’t magically appear. A space has to be made, and that decision is never easy.

🐾 Here’s how you can help:
✔️ Microchip your pets and keep the information up to date
✔️ Spay and neuter
✔️ Make sure you're truly ready for the lifelong commitment of a pet

Shelters and rescues are exhausted from constantly having to clean up problems we didn’t create. Sometimes it feels like we’re preaching to an empty room. But we’ll keep speaking up, because animals are counting on us.

Please, be a good human every day. The animals need you.

Hey friends and Mutts! We have been a little quieter than normal. Evelyn has been going through it with a back issue that caused temporary paralysis and a stint at the hospital. She is home now and we had to move or cancel our plans for the next few weeks.
If you need a cake or cookies.. let us know we can accommodate small orders. On a pawsitive note her care team is amazing. Murphy as tax!
