"Mayday, Mayday!" 😉 We didn't realize we had run out of April days, so we're posting our final Pet First Aid Awareness Month post today!
Dog Owners: 5 First Aid Tips Every Dog Parent Should Know
Dogs are curious, active, and sometimes a little too fearless. From backyard play to daily walks, to general mischief... mishaps can happen fast. When something unexpected happens, the goal is to respond calmly, give safe immediate help, and recognize when veterinary care is needed.
1️⃣ Paw Pad Cuts or Bleeding
Check paws after walks or playtime. Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth if bleeding, and rinse away dirt or debris. If bleeding continues more than a few minutes or the cut is deep, seek care.
2️⃣ Vomiting or Diarrhea
Offer fresh water and monitor closely. A single mild episode may pass, but repeated vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, or refusing water can lead to dehydration quickly.
3️⃣ Overheating or Heat Stress
Move your dog to a cool area, offer small amounts of water, and wet paws or fur with cool (not ice-cold) water. Heavy panting, weakness, vomiting, or collapse needs immediate care.
4️⃣ Limping or Sudden Injury
Limit activity and allow your dog to rest. If limping lasts more than a day, worsens, or your dog cannot bear weight, contact your vet.
5️⃣ Swallowed Something They Shouldn’t Have
Dogs love to investigate with their mouths. If your dog ate a toy, sock, medication, chocolate, or another risky item, call your vet or emergency service right away for guidance.
