Heads up, Indiana pet parents! TICK SEASON is here, and this year, it arrived earlier and more aggressively than usual across our region. Due to increasingly warm winters and early spring temperatures, tick seasons have expanded, and the risk for both dogs and outdoor cats will remain high throughout the summer!
Here's what we want you to know:
✔️ Ticks can be active any time temperatures are above freezing. Right now they're thriving.
✔️ Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses can be serious, but they're largely preventable.
✔️ If your pet isn't on a current flea/tick prevention protocol, now is the time.
Not sure what protection your dog or cat is on , or whether it's still the right fit for their lifestyle? Give us a call Monday through Friday. We're happy to talk through your options! And share this to make sure your friends are ready to take action, too.

May is "Chip Your Pet Month", so let's do a Microchip Roll Call! Post a photo in the comments that shows your microchipped pet! The more "chipped" pets in your pic, the more bonus points you'll get! Photo fun in 3...2...1... Go!

(REMEMBER, "bonus points" have no monetary value, and cannot be exchanged for good or services at Greentown Animal Hospital. They do have a high value in the "bragging rights" area, though. Have fun!)

We’re proud to support the next generation of veterinary professionals and grateful for the opportunity to work with such bright, motivated students. Thank you to the folks at Veterinary Science at Kokomo Area Career Center for the kind words, and a big "Congratulations" to Aunika as she takes the next step toward her future!

Our job shadow sites are what keep this program alive. Without the hands-on experience, our class would be filled with lectures, videos, and endless assignments. That’s just not the kind of learning we believe in! We want lots of in person and on the job experience.

We are incredibly thankful for our community partners who open their doors to our students. We currently have EIGHT in-county job shadow sites and three additional out-of-county locations that have graciously hosted our students. Their support truly makes all the difference.

So how does it all come together?
Ms. J puts in the work behind the scenes by reaching out to local businesses, building relationships, and sharing the vision of our veterinary program. From there, she coordinates schedules with students, counselors, and sites to make sure everything runs smoothly. It takes time, effort, and a lot of communication but it’s worth it.

We’d like to give a special shoutout to our friends at Greentown Animal Hospital. Dr. Pence (pictured left) has supported this program for many years, and we are so grateful for that continued partnership. Dr. Hollingsworth (pictured right) and Dr. Ranadive have also provided incredible job shadow opportunities for our students. Their knowledge, patience, and kindness do not go unnoticed.

Aunika completed her final job shadow day yesterday! She loved her experience and is excited to continue her journey at the Vet Tech Institute of Indy. ❤️🐾

Dog Owners: 5 First Aid Tips Every Dog Parent Should Know

Dogs are curious, active, and sometimes a little too fearless. From backyard play to daily walks, to general mischief... mishaps can happen fast. When something unexpected happens, the goal is to respond calmly, give safe immediate help, and recognize when veterinary care is needed.
1️⃣ Paw Pad Cuts or Bleeding
Check paws after walks or playtime. Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth if bleeding, and rinse away dirt or debris. If bleeding continues more than a few minutes or the cut is deep, seek care.
2️⃣ Vomiting or Diarrhea
Offer fresh water and monitor closely. A single mild episode may pass, but repeated vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, or refusing water can lead to dehydration quickly.
3️⃣ Overheating or Heat Stress
Move your dog to a cool area, offer small amounts of water, and wet paws or fur with cool (not ice-cold) water. Heavy panting, weakness, vomiting, or collapse needs immediate care.
4️⃣ Limping or Sudden Injury
Limit activity and allow your dog to rest. If limping lasts more than a day, worsens, or your dog cannot bear weight, contact your vet.
5️⃣ Swallowed Something They Shouldn’t Have
Dogs love to investigate with their mouths. If your dog ate a toy, sock, medication, chocolate, or another risky item, call your vet or emergency service right away for guidance.

Cat Owners: 5 First Aid Tips Every Cat Parent Should Know and Share!
It's still Pet First Aid Awareness Month, and, well, cats are experts at hiding pain. Injuries can look minor until they suddenly aren’t. So, cat first aid is often about staying calm, helping safely at home, and knowing when to seek professional care.
1️ Minor Cuts or Scratches
Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth to stop bleeding. Rinse gently with warm water and keep your cat from licking the area. If bleeding continues or the wound is deep, seek care.
2️ Vomiting or Diarrhea
Offer fresh water and monitor closely. A single mild episode may pass, but repeated vomiting, diarrhea, or refusing water can lead to dehydration quickly.
3️ Possible Poisoning
Remove your cat from the source and save the package or label if possible. Do not induce vomiting unless instructed by a veterinarian or poison expert. Call your vet or ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center: (888) 426-4435.
4️ Limping or Injury
Keep your cat quiet and confined. Jumping or running can make injuries worse.
5️ Breathing Trouble or Extreme Lethargy
These can be signs of a serious emergency. Seek immediate veterinary care.
