Life With Old Dogs Learning Moment

Today was a reminder that not every dog problem is actually a dog problem.

I was standing beside my van giving the dogs treats when Sasha suddenly started barking. A stranger had walked up behind me so closely that I didn't even know he was there until she alerted me. He then reached toward my vehicle without asking.

Thankfully, I stopped the situation before it went any further.

But it got me thinking: if Sasha had reacted differently and tried to bite him, how many people would have blamed the dog instead of asking why a stranger thought it was okay to walk up behind someone, invade their personal space, and reach into a vehicle uninvited?

Our dogs have boundaries too. Not every dog wants to be touched. Not every dog wants a stranger reaching into their space. And no one should assume they have the right to interact with someone else's dog without permission.

Today, Sasha reminded me that respect goes both ways.

Older German Shepherds And Dental Issues. The Impact of Bad Teeth and Gums Goes Beyond The Mouth.

As our beloved German Shepherds age, it becomes increasingly important to pay attention to their dental health. While dental issues may seem like a minor concern compared to other age-related ailments, the impact of bad teeth and gums can extend far beyond just the mouth.

As knowledgeable dog owners, it is crucial for us to understand how neglected dental hygiene in older German Shepherds can lead to various health complications and affect their overall well-being. In this podcast, we will explore the significance of maintaining good oral health in these magnificent dogs and delve into the potential consequences that arise from ignoring their dental needs.

As our dogs get older, it's not uncommon for them to become picky eaters. Changes in smell, taste, dental health, medications, or simply advanced age can make mealtime more challenging than it used to be.

If you share your life with a senior dog, you may have experienced the frustration of putting down a perfectly good meal only to have your dog walk away from it. It can be concerning when an older dog isn't getting the calories and nutrition they need.

One thing I've found helpful is offering healthy, high-value treats that are both nutritious and appealing. Homemade treats can be a great way to encourage eating while adding extra calories for dogs that need help maintaining a healthy weight.

If your older dog could use a little encouragement at mealtime, or you're looking for a nutritious weight-gain treat option, check out this Life With Old Dogs recipe:

Sasha never ceases to amaze me.

While walking through the northern pasture today, she became fixated on a patch of tall grass. As I got closer, I found a tiny fawn tucked safely away, waiting for mom to return.

We gave the little one plenty of space and moved on, but what an incredible Life With Old Dogs moment.

Just another beautiful day at Woody's Place Senior German Shepherd Sanctuary

Fun fact: young fawns have very little scent, helping them stay hidden from predators.

"My pants are so floofy... my pants are so floofy"...

What the song doesn't mention is the endless brushing, surprise burrs, mystery leaves, mud baths, and daily negotiations required to keep a long-haired German Shepherd looking this fabulous.

The floof is beautiful. The floof is also a full-time job.

If you have a long haired dog or cat... what's the strangest thing you've ever found tangled in their fur?

Have you ever been told you're keeping your old dog alive too long?

If you share life with a senior dog, chances are you've encountered unsolicited opinions from friends, family members, strangers, or even people on social media. They see a gray muzzle, a slower gait, arthritis, or a mobility device and immediately assume your dog is suffering.

But is old age really the same as a poor quality of life?

In this episode of Life With Old Dogs, I explore why people feel compelled to comment on the care of aging dogs, the emotional impact those comments can have on devoted caregivers, and how to separate judgment from genuine concern. I also discuss what quality of life truly means, why mobility aids are not a death sentence, and how to respond when others question your decisions.

Whether your dog is simply slowing down or requires extra support in their golden years, this episode offers perspective, encouragement, and practical ways to navigate one of the most challenging conversations senior dog owners face.

Because old age is not a disease, and every dog deserves to be evaluated as an individual—not by a number on a calendar.

In this episode:

Why people often judge the care of senior dogs
The difference between aging and suffering
How these comments affect loving caregivers
What quality of life really looks like
Why wheelchairs and mobility aids can be life-enhancing
Respectful responses to criticism and unsolicited advice

Real food doesn't have to be complicated.

One of the simplest ways to support your dog's health, especially as they get older, is by adding fresh, whole foods to their bowl.

Benefits of real food may include:

• Better digestion
• Improved nutrient absorption
• Healthier skin, coat, and nails
• Better weight management
• Increased energy
• Reduced allergies and sensitivities
• More enjoyable meals for picky senior dogs

And it doesn't have to mean preparing elaborate recipes.

Try adding:
🐾 A few strips of plain cooked chicken breast with a tablespoon of plain yogurt
🐾 One cooked egg with a few steamed mushrooms
🐾 Ground turkey and spinach

Small changes can make a meaningful difference over time.

At Woody's Place, caring for senior German Shepherds has taught me that nutrition is one of the most powerful tools we have to support health, comfort, and quality of life.
