ANNOUNCEMENT:

Greensburg & Decatur County Animal Shelter has been Awarded a $1000 Grant to Save More Pets in Decatur County.

Best Friends Animal Society grant recognizes Greensburg & Decatur County Animal Shelter for increasing lifesaving pet transports and adoptions through Partner Up Challenge

Greensburg & Decatur County Animal Shelter was recently awarded a $1000 grant from Best Friends Animal Society, a leading national animal welfare organization working to end the killing of cats and dogs in America’s shelters.

The grant recognizes Greensburg & Decatur County Animal Shelters efforts to increase pet transports, rescues and adoptions through the Best Friends Partner Up Challenge — a nationwide initiative designed to build lifesaving momentum by strengthening collaboration between shelters and rescue groups to help place more pets in loving homes.

The Partner Up Challenge ran from April 1-30, 2025. Over 160 organizations participated, leading to over 2,100 animals positively impacted across the country.

“Through the Partner Up Challenge, we built and strengthened our partnerships with Canine Castaways rescue INC and held a successful adoption event and were able to get 9 cat and dogs into homes while creating more space for pets in need,” said Greensburg & Decatur County Animal Shelter. “We were honored to be chosen to participate in the challenge, and for Best Friends’ support in amplifying our transfers and lifesaving. Being awarded this grant means we can save even more of our community’s homeless pets and keep the momentum going!”

A pet is “transferred” when they are moved from a shelter facing capacity issues to another shelter or rescue group that has the space and resources to help them get adopted. Transfer partnerships are critical to lifesaving and play an important role in reaching no-kill. Best Friends works with shelters and rescues across the country to improve partnerships and increase transfers.

“No-kill is all about working together, and Greensburg & Decatur County Animal Shelter and the other Partner Up Challenge participants really came together to save the cats and dogs of Decatur County.” said Whitney Bollinger, Director of Strategy & Network Operations, Best Friends Animal Society. “We are thrilled to recognize Greensburg & Decatur County Animal Shelter’s important lifesaving work with a grant that recognizes the value of collaboration and will help more cats and dogs get into homes.”

They tell me I’ve been here the longest.

At first, I didn’t mind. I thought it meant I’d just have to wait a little longer for my forever person. But days turned into months. I’ve watched so many friends leave — tails wagging, tongues out, happy goodbye barks. I curl up on my blanket and pretend I’m happy for them. I am. But it hurts. Every day, I wait. I watch people walk by. Some look, some stop, but none stay. That’s okay — I’ve got hope stitched into every beat of my heart. I know my person is out there. I’m not perfect. I came in scared and unsure, with some old stories written in the scars you can’t see. But I’ll be your best friend if you give me a chance. I dream of soft beds, belly rubs, and someone who talks to me like I matter. I don’t need much. Just a quiet corner of your world — and all the love I’ve been saving for you. Please don’t walk past my kennel. Stop. Say my name. Let me show you who I am.

Still hoping,
Rhino 🩶

🎉 Celebrating Ashley Emsweller Hungate – 2025 WGU Distinguished Graduate! We were honored to receive a $1,000 donation in honor of Ashley's recognition 🎉

In April, we were thrilled to learn that Ashley Emsweller Hungate was selected as a 2025 Distinguished Graduate by Western Governors University (WGU) — a prestigious honor awarded to only a few exceptional alumni each year.

As part of this recognition, Ashley was given the opportunity to direct a $1,000 donation to a nonprofit of her choice — and she chose Friends of the Greensburg & Decatur County Animal Shelter! 🐾

💙 $500 of her generous donation was placed in our general fund
💙 The remaining $500 was set aside for the future construction of a new shelter

Ashley is a true community champion — whether she’s out on her farm with her kids and animals, serving as a Decatur County Councilwoman, Greensburg & Decatur County Animal Shelter Board member or leading innovative change at the state level. As Chief of Staff for Indiana’s Management Performance Hub, her leadership helped launch a nationally recognized data literacy program that continues to improve lives across Indiana and beyond.

Ashley earned her MBA from WGU in 2018 and continues to lead with purpose, passion, and heart.

Thank you, Ashley, for your service, your support, and for choosing to uplift animals and the community we serve. We’re lucky to have you on our side! 💛

On behalf of our entire board — thank you! 🐾

Once again, we reached out to our amazing community to help a furry friend in need of surgery, and once again, you stepped up without hesitation. Our goal was to raise $750 — and in just 24 hours, you surpassed it! Our furry friend is scheduled for surgery, and we cannot wait to provide you with an update.

💙 Facebook Fundraiser: $758
💙 Venmo (after fees): $196.69
➡️ Total Raised: $954.69

At our next board meeting, I’ll be recommending that we create a dedicated fund to hold the extra money raised. This way, we’ll be ready to help the next furry friend who needs us.

We’re so grateful for your kindness and support. 🐶🐱❤️

Spring is coming and so is the increased production of fleas!! Even if you don't see fleas on your pet, they should be kept on a regular flea preventative. Here at the shelter, we offer a topical solution (for dogs and cats) for just $17 per dose! Each dose lasts 30 days. It is the same brand we use here on our shelter pets. We accept cash and card payments! You can come pick up the meds and take them back home to administer them yourself, or you can bring your pets and we will administer the prevention for you :)
