We’re excited to introduce two newest residents of the GSC: Amir and Jabari, a pair of sand cat brothers 🐱

According to their keeper, Megan, both cats are active and curious, with distinct personalities that make them a joy to work with. Amir tends to be the bolder of the two, diving into new experiences right away, while Jabari is a bit more cautious and reserved as he explores his surroundings.

Both Amir and Jabari are doing well with their training sessions and particularly enjoy exercising on their running wheel.

It is with great sadness that we share that Oscar, our forest Guinea hog and one of our longtime farm residents, has passed away.

Oscar joined the GSC family in 2008 and spent an incredible 17 years with us, which is well beyond the typical 10-15-year life expectancy of his species. During that time, he became a familiar and much-loved part of the farm. He especially loved snacking on tomatoes, snoozing in the sun, and could sometimes be found going for little walks around the farmyard.

In recent months, Oscar had been slowing down with age related changes as well as progressive dental disease, and our animal care and veterinary teams were keeping a close eye on him. After a recent decline, we made the difficult but compassionate decision to help him pass peacefully.

“Oscar was such a friendly and curious pig,” says Darcie H., Advanced Animal Care Specialist. “He was a favorite among staff and guests of all ages, and he loved a good belly rub from anyone. He was always getting into something, whether it was exploring the barn during our morning cleans, or going on walks throughout the zoo. He also loved lazy days filled with sunshine naps and his favorite snacks. His happy grunts brought joy to all those around him and his presence will be deeply missed,” reflects Darcie.

We’re grateful to our animal care and veterinary teams for their dedicated care of Oscar over his long life. And to everyone who stopped to say hello to him over the years, thank you. Oscar brought joy to countless guests, staff members, and volunteers, and he will always be part of our GSC family 🐖❤️

With so much cloud cover, we’re calling off Starry Safari for tonight. We’ll hope clearer skies will prevail for our public scope viewing next Friday, Aug. 29, beginning at 9pm. We hope that night to see sights like our recent view of the Veil Nebula, the remnant of a supernova.
