Today I was asked what I do to prepare for extreme cold weather, so I thought I would share my best tips and what works for me.
⭐️Water intake, forage, and movement are the most important things to keep horses warm. ⭐️
🔹Movement and Forage🔹
If you have to stall to keep them out of the elements, then that forage is very important to keep their gut moving which helps warm the body. It is important to provide them with extra hay.
🔹WATER🔹is extremely important!!
It helps the gut and helps prevent the dreaded colic when weather is changing or extreme.
-Consider giving electrolytes to help encourage them to drink
-heated water buckets are my best friend!
-if you have a water trough with a good heater try to fill it, in the event that you lose power or your spigot freezes. If this is not an option make sure you have gallon jugs or good buckets on hand in case you need to fill water in the house.
-if you use a hose to fill buckets and you have access to a air compressor blow out your water hoses after every use. Get “quick connect” attachments, this makes the process much easier.
-make sure you store the hose flat on the ground. Now is not the time to hang it on the wall or use a reel.
🔹Blankets🔹
-Everyone gets blanketed. When weather is this extreme, better safe than sorry
-My “old folks” the seniors get double blanketed, they can’t spare the extra energy it takes to keep warm. If they have to use extra energy to keep warm, they are burning calories and losing weight
-I will even blanket and bring in my “littles” the ponies who have the best hair coats in the barn
🔹Stalls🔹
l took advantage of yesterday’s warm weather and have been stripping all of my stalls and heavily bedding them.
-If temps are going to be dangerously low, you have to also keep the humans in mind.
-Limit your exposure to the cold as much as possible during the extreme cold days.
I will be telling my boarders to stay home and stay safe!
(I also update my boarders frequently during extreme weather, and I usually send pictures to hold them over until they are able to safely come out again)
-I also have to protect myself, which means I may not clean stall as well as I normally do on a daily basis, because that’s just common sense, and I am always upfront about that.
Everyone stay safe and stay warm! ❄️🌨️☃️
*don’t forget to plug your truck in also
