Some common misconceptions about parasites you should consider:
Fleas - ❌ Indoor pets don't need protection from fleas. ✅Not true! We often carry fleas inside on our clothing and just like mosquitoes and other small insects, they've adapted well to surviving inside! Keeping your pets protected year round helps prevent an infestation.
Ticks - ❌Our pets don't need tick prevention, we have a fenced-in yard! ✅ Unfortunately, ticks and fleas make for poor neighbors, they don't respect your fence! While keeping a yard trimmed short and even treated topically can help reduce the number of ticks seen, we still find ticks can get through these defenses and latch on to your pet (or catch a ride inside to latch on to you!). We strongly advise all pets be on year round flea/tick prevention to keep these disease-carrying parasites away from your family.
Heartworm - ❌ We don't see heartworm disease in New York, so we don't need to have our pet on prevention. ✅Heartworm disease has been making its way up north! Heartworm are spread by mosquitoes and we certainly have plenty of those! We tested two positive cases last year and expect to see more this year. This disease is deadly without treatment and unfortunately, treatment is a long, expensive process that can be uncomfortable for some pets. Prevention is key! (for a look at prevalence maps, check out https://www.heartwormsociety.org/veterinary-resources/incidence-maps)
Intestinal Parasites - ❌ We gave a deworming medication to our pet, so we don't need to worry about intestinal parasites. ✅ Most over the counter deworming medications have decent coverage, but none of them get everything! We recommend testing a f***l sample at least annually (more frequently if your pet is an avid hunter) to confirm no intestinal parasites are present. If worms are detected, we will know exactly what medication will best treat them. Most heartworm preventatives will treat a majority of intestinal parasites, so all the more reason to consider a monthly preventative for your pet!
‼️Remember! Some intestinal parasites our pets get can infect humans too! Wash hands after handling f***l material and if you are concerned you may have contracted a parasite, contact your [human] doctor immediately!
