How do I prepare my dog for holiday boarding?

🐾 Planning to board your dog this season? Don’t wait till drop-off day.

Familiarity reduces stress. That’s why we require Day & Train visits before boarding.

3 Solutions:

• Schedule at least 4 Day & Train days before the stay.
• Practice short separations at home with crate or mat work.
• Pack a familiar item (blanket, shirt) for comfort.

Sounds backwards, but it works.

In early training, we teach dogs to move away from the treat to earn the treat. This builds impulse control, focus, and decision-making from the very start. 🐕
Less grabbing. More thinking. Better results.

🍗 Is your dog the holiday food thief?

Dogs don’t understand “stealing” — they follow opportunity.

3 Solutions:

1. Teach “Place” to stay from underfoot. Move your "Place Mat or Bed" 4 to 6 feet away from you. Your dog can see you, be near you, but not be on top of the food.

2. Keep counters clean — no temptation, no reward.

3. Supervise or confine during high-risk times.

🐶 Doorbell? Delivery truck? Squirrel? Bark mode activated?

Barking is natural — but it can be redirected.

3 Redirect Solutions:

1. Teach "Here Comes a Friend", Redirect their Attention from the Distraction back to you with a Treat.

2. Teach “Thank You” or “Quiet” Redirect their Attention back on you with a Treat or Toy.

3. Don't Yell - Call then to you, "Come" If they don't come, Go to them, Treat to their Nose, Backup and let them come to you for the Treat.

My dog gets anxious when the house is busy or loud.
🧠 Is your dog struggling to cope with the holiday chaos?

Lesson: Anxious dogs don’t need punishment — they need support and structure.

3 Solutions:

✦ Create a quiet “den” area with music or white noise.
✦ Let them chew: long-lasting chews calm the brain.
✦ Add short decompression walks in your day — even 10 minutes helps!

🎄 How do I calm my dog when guests arrive?

Holiday guests coming over? Does your dog lose their mind with excitement (or fear)? Your dog needs structure before the doorbell rings.

3 Solutions:

💚 Give them a job: put them on a leash and ask for a Sit/Stay as the guest enters.
💚 Use a mat or crate to create a calm “place” away from the door.
💚 Practice the routine before company comes – don’t wait until the real event!

Service Therapy Alert Training: Dogs with a job

Our goal at STAT is to train dogs with high level skills in order to full-fill their job, whether that is as a Service Dog, Therapy Dog, or Alert Dog. (We will use the term Assistant Dog referring to any of those jobs.) At STAT, we will help develop, train, and certify dogs that pass all 4 levels of our program.

These Levels are: Level T. Temperament; Level 1. Foundation and Home Skills; Level 2. Community and Public Access; Level 3. Service Tasks.

Level T is our Temperament qualification. The first criteria for a successful Assistant dog is its temperament. The appropriate temperament for an Assistant Dog is one that is alert, but non-reactive to its environment, people or other animals. With a structured environment, training, and maturing many dogs can achieve Level T.

The next 3 Levels of our program are related to training. Level 1. Foundation and Home Skills are developing good manners and basic obedience. Level 2. Community and Public Access is continuing to develop obedience skills outside the home environment. Building attention and focus under distractions. Level 3. Service Tasks is teaching the dogs to retrieve items for owners, open doors, turn on switches, or alert to physical or emotional needs.
