This is why I recommend NOT fixing them
This is bun owner. Don't be like bun owner... full of regret, and absolutely heartbroken.
Here's why:
1) Surgery of any kind is INCREDIBLY risky for rabbits, especially because they do not handle anesthesia well. It's difficult to find the balance between under enough for surgery and so under they stop breathing.
2) They can't take any kind of narcotic pain killers, because it locks their guts up and will send them into GI stasis in a hurry. And if you've ever tried to get a rabbit who didn't want to eat, to eat something to get things moving, you know how fun it is 🙃
3) keeping a smooth-brained (literally!) animal from jumping and stretching after a surgery is a task for a team because they don't get it, of course. And they're not about to leave the itchy stitches alone.
4) they are especially prone to scar tissue, which can easily build up and cut off vital functions including bowel movement (something similar to this actually happened to a dog I used to have. RIP, Drover 💔), so again, GI stasis.
5) It doesn't prevent enough cancer or disease to justify the risks - the Greene study from 1949 "proving" it prevents cancer was based upon a colony of rabbits bred to be prone to cancer. The newest studies prove their risk of cancer is significantly lower than humans.
Heart issues, and other cancers are not uncommon. Does are prone to adrenal/pituitary cancer post spay (just like ferrets), and bucks are prone to mammary cancer (yes, they have them same as human males). We know HUMANS have hormone issues after a vasectomy/hysterectomy, why would rabbits be different?
6) Altering can also cause behavioral issues, because they need their go**ds for more than just sexual function. It's where the hormones for regulating lots of things come from, and if you mess up that balance... A common side effect is aggression. Last year I put down a previously lovely dwarf for his heartbroken owner, because after his neuter he turned into a territorial, ragey, bitey butthead. Even with the behavioral rehab, he still wouldn't quit biting.
It's NOT worth the risks!
