Green Lake Area Animal Shelter

The vision of the Green Lake Area Animal Shelter is a community in which all pets are considered part of the family, are provided with compassionate care, companionship, training, and are spayed or neutered. We also seek to become the Green Lake area's primary facility for pet adoption, and to be considered a reliable, credible resource to address any animal issue.

Remi is a 1.5–2.5 year old female Lab/Heeler mix who has been with us since early September and is ready for her forever home!

She is doing wonderful in her foster home and has made great progress, but she would truly love a family of her own. Remi loves to play ball, enjoys staying active, and is currently working on her manners. Most of all, she is incredibly sweet and thrives on affection — she just wants to be close to her people and be loved.

If you’re looking for a loyal, playful, and loving companion, Remi may be your girl!

Check her out on our website, fill out an adoption application, and please wait patiently for us to call you.

Please share!

As 2025 comes to an end, we reflect on a year filled with heartbreak, healing, and second chances.

We witnessed cruelty, loss, and returns, but we also saw resilience, love, and animals finding their way home even when it took many tries. One thing we promise will never change is this: no matter how long it has been, we will always take our animals back. They are family forever.

We created this short video to highlight just a few of our long-term and returning stories. Every adoption matters. Every return matters. Every life matters. We simply cannot show them all because the video would be days long, but please know that every single animal who has come through our doors is loved and remembered.

🐾 Thunder — 601 days
🐾 Koda — 308 days
🐾 Parm — 223 days
🐾 Corndog — 172 days
🐾 Hansel — 195 days
🐾 Leo — 838 days
🐾 Debbie — 427 days

Leo and Koda were both adopted and returned a few times, and that is okay. They were simply waiting for the right time and the right home, and we were lucky enough to love them more than once.

Every wait mattered. Every return mattered. Every adoption mattered.

Thank you for standing with us through the hard days and the hopeful tomorrows. Your support makes every second chance possible.

🚨 URGENT NOTICE – SPAY/NEUTER TRANSPORT CANCELED 🚨

Due to unpredictable weather and potentially unsafe driving conditions, the feline spay and neuter transport scheduled for TOMORROW, December 29th, has been CANCELED.

The safety of our staff and the cats in our care must come first. We cannot risk an accident or injury.

Please consider contacting other low-cost spay/neuter organizations if you need immediate assistance. We must work directly with the clinic to reschedule the cats who were already signed up for this transport.

Below is a list of places you can contact if you need urgent services and cannot wait for a reschedule date. If you are able to drive your cat to Madison, these clinics may be able to help. Some also offer services for dogs, and some local shelters may offer transport options as well.

I recently had a surrender appointment with two kind women. The emotional, caring conversation for the animal was rare. As they left, one said something harmless.

“We’ve got to go to our real jobs, but we wish we could just play with puppies as you do.”

They didn’t mean any harm. Not even a little.
But that sentence has sat heavily on my chest

Because animal shelter work is one of the most misunderstood jobs there is.

Yes, we love animals. And people use that against us, abuse it.
Yes, we absolutely treasure the moments when we get to cuddle a puppy or watch kittens romping around. And being happy.

But that is the tiniest sliver of what we do.

What people don’t see are the hours spent making impossible decisions. The intake rooms were filled with heartbreak. Having to vaccinate and administer dewormer preventatives as soon as they arrive. They see animals that come in neglected, injured, shut down, or broken. The conversations where we absorb someone else’s grief, guilt, anger, or desperation all at once. And are meant to fix it all right THEN.

They don’t see staff constantly cleaning kennels, advocating for animals that don’t have voices. Fighting burnout while still showing up with compassion. Being screamed at, thanked sometimes, ignored, blamed, looked down on, and relied on all in the same day.

Shelter staff don’t “just play with puppies.”
We carry the weight of lives every single day.

And we do it because we believe animals matter.

Because even on the hardest days, saving one life or giving one animal a chance makes it worth it.

So the next time you think of shelter work, know this.
Behind every wagging tail is a team holding up an entire world you rarely get to see. All while facing personal battles every single day.
They may be heroes. But they are humans.

Johnny & Casper

A few months ago, we took in three cats from a home. Earlier this month, we were contacted again and brought in two more cats and four dogs from the same situation.

Sadly, Johnny experienced a very unexpected medical complication. After weeks of treatment and multiple medications, his eye did not improve and he ultimately needed to have it surgically removed. While this was not an easy outcome, Johnny is now healing and feeling much better.

Johnny’s stitches were removed on Christmas Eve and he is doing great! He just needs to wear his cone for a few more days and will be ready for adoption very soon.

Johnny has an incredibly special bond with his brother Casper. Casper is Johnny’s comfort, his seeing eye, and his best friend — so this pair MUST be adopted together.

We would also like to send a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staff at Associated Veterinary Clinic in Ripon for their compassion, care, and support during this difficult time — and for performing Johnny’s surgery.

Interested in giving this special duo a forever home?
Please head to our website, fill out an adoption application, and wait for a call from us to schedule an appointment to meet them.

These boys have been through so much and are ready for their happy ending.

Meet Tortilla & Slinky 🐾 Bonded Pair

Tortilla and Slinky came to us as strays from the same property on separate days, and it didn’t take long for us to realize just how connected they are. We even believe we may know who their “kids” are — so it’s safe to say these two are quite the little couple!

Both Tortilla and Slinky are incredibly sweet, affectionate cats who truly adore each other. They love attention, enjoy playtime, and are happiest when they’re together. Because they have not had experience living with dogs and seem fearful of them, they would do best in a calm, dog-free home where they can feel safe and comfortable.

These two have been patiently waiting for a few months now and have not received a single application — and it truly breaks our hearts, because they are such wonderful companions.

They would love nothing more than to find a forever home together where they can continue their love story — side by side, as they’ve always been.

If you’re looking to double your love, Tortilla and Slinky are ready to steal your heart!

If you are interested in adoption, start the process by completing our adoption application from our website at www.glaas.org. Then wait for us to give you a call to set up a time for you to visit the shelter!

Thank you!

✨ Christmas Miracles Do Happen ✨

If you’ve been following the journey of Blue, the dog who was brought to Wisconsin from Florida by someone who truly believed they were helping, this is the happy ending you’ve been waiting for.

Last week, we received a call about a “stray dog.” Naturally, we expected her to be from our local area.
Boy, were we wrong and shocked.

When she arrived, she was thin, patchy, and honestly, at first glance, we were concerned she may have had mange. But then we noticed something that stopped us in our tracks. The word “Kiara” had been shaved into the hair on her back. That alone told us there was more to her story.

As part of our normal intake protocol, we immediately scanned her for a microchip, something we do for every stray and surrender because a chip can tell us so much. And to our surprise, this odd-looking little girl had a chip.

It turns out that Blue had been missing since August, and we believe she was likely found by the individual who brought her to us earlier this month.

At that moment, everything changed.

He truly thought he was helping, and we gently educated him on why it is so important to contact the local shelter or police department in the area where a pet is found because that gives lost pets the very best chance of making it home.

Thanks to that microchip, a few phone calls, and some amazing teamwork, we were able to locate her family.

And the best part?

Blue is HOME.
All the way back in Florida, right where she belongs.

We cannot say thank you enough to the people who helped us track down her family, coordinate communication, and especially to those who stepped up to help transport her safely back home. A special thank you to everyone who donated funds to help make it possible for Blue to get back home. This truly took a village, and it ended with a miracle.

Please let this story be your reminder.
* Microchips save lives.
* Local reporting matters.
* And kindness, even when imperfect, can still lead to beautiful endings.

Welcome home, Blue. 💙🐾
