Here’s a glimpse from last week’s Intern Ground Rounds Presentation!

Each intern prepares a formal presentation on a unique or educational case they encountered during their internship. These rounds highlight the intern’s clinical journey, from diagnosis and treatment plans to key takeaways and real world learning moments. It’s one of the capstone projects of the year and a great way to showcase their growth and expertise!

This sweet girl came to us for signs concerning for a GI foreign body obstruction (vomiting, not eating well, lethargy). After some diagnostics, we confirmed she had foreign material anchored in her stomach while the rest of it was trying to pass into the small intestines, essentially turning her small intestines into a scrunchy (called plication).

Thankfully her owners trusted us with her care and she was taken to surgery after some stabilizing IV fluids. She historically has been managed for seizures as well, so our doctor tailored her anesthesia protocol with that in mind. She did great for surgery and her foreign material was removed via an incision into the stomach (gastrotomy) and a single incision into her small intestine (enterotomy)! It was clumps of small plastic pieces tangled up in a ton of grass that weaved itself into a rope-like formation.

Her and her family are the nicest around and we hope they get to spend many more years together 🐾❤️❤️

July 4th is less than a month away. NOW is the time to make sure you are prepared for your pets’ needs and try to prevent any serious disasters!!

🇺🇸More pets get loose and end up lost or in a shelter on July 4th than any other day of the year. Now is the time to make sure your home and yard are secure and to make sure you have some form of identification on your pet (collar, tags, registered microchip)!

🎆Many pets benefit from veterinary prescribed medications to help with fear and anxiety associated with fireworks. NOW is the time to talk to your primary care veterinarian to get medication for your pet (please don’t wait until days before the holiday!)

🌽Summer holidays often coincide with increased dietary indiscretion cases in veterinary clinics.. whether it be GI upset from eating people food or toxic alcohol at parties, or the more serious issue of GI obstruction when dogs get things like corn cobs or bones. Please be cautious what your pet can get into or what you/your party guests give them as treats!

Stay safe and enjoy the holidays! 🐾✨🇺🇸✨🐾

This little guy is as sweet as they come! ❤️🐾

🚨He saw us today for a sudden inability to use his back legs. After doctor examination and some screening diagnostics, we are suspecting he has intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), which in very simple terms is when the spinal cord either gets inflamed, bruised, compressed, or even transected. Depending on the degree of injury you may see just pain (commonly presents as reluctance to go up/down stairs or to jump), or you may see anything from weakness to full paralysis. This injury is common in small dogs that like to jump on/off furniture, but it can be seen in any breed, any age! Dachshunds are predisposed to a form of this injury, as well as overweight animals to some degree.

🏥This condition requires advanced imaging (such as MRI or CT) usually performed by a veterinary neurologist, to be truly diagnosed. On an emergency basis, we control pain💊, screen for other causes that can look similar with x-rays of the back 🩻 and sometimes check blood work🩸, as well as assess ability to urinate (it can be life threatening if the nerves that go to the bladder are involved with the injury and the patient cannot urinate).

🩺Depending on the veterinarian’s neurological exam of the patient, we may recommend immediate referral to a neurologist for work up and/or spinal surgery, or we may discuss medical management trial if appropriate. Some cases can recover without surgery, while others may require surgery to have a chance at walking again.

This precious boy is a candidate for going home with medications and instructions for bed rest and nursing care. We hope with time he regains function in his legs and goes on to live a long life with his family that love him dearly!

🐾Patient Spotlight🐾

This sweet 4-month-old Frenchie came to us with a painful corneal ulcer. After a thorough eye exam including fluorescein staining, Dr. Roth prescribed medications and an e-collar.

We’re happy to report great healing progress at the recheck!
