"I was pulled over today for speeding. The officer did not know me nor did I know him, but we each showed one another a mutual display of respect in our interaction. He was doing his job, and I had made a mistake in trying to hurry home to get started moving that lead to our path's crossing. He ran my information, and in the end we talked more about how our individual days were going, and the situations and circumstances within our society that have lead to interactions such as he and I's to play out much more negatively, some even deadly, than ours, than we talked about the situation that lead to him pulling me over. In the end we both thanked each other for our mutual displays of respect and agreed to take a "selfie" together to help tell our story. I can't stress enough that NO demographic and/or profession of people are all bad. Neither of us are the enemy. We can continue to fight against each other until we are literally "black and blue", or we can show one another the respect we inherently deserve, not as "black man" and "blue police officer", but as humans. None greater, none less... "

How often do I see clients whose dogs have gotten into serious trouble because their owners have allowed, or encouraged interactions that their dogs have absolutely not desired?

Not every dog is cut out for the family BBQ, or being pet by strangers. And not every dog is cut out for the dog park, day care, or on-leash meetings. These dogs will often show their dislike for being placed in these situations by attempting to escape/hide/growl/explode—and if that doesn’t work, they will protect themselves by inflicting damage on the unsuspecting (but should be suspecting!) human, or the curious or pushy dog.

I get that many owners have romantic notions of what dogs should be like, and how they should interact with their environment. I also get that many owners assume that by forcing these interactions that they will improve things. And of course, I get that many owners simply don’t know any better. But here’s the thing, your desires, your ill-advised “fix”, or your lack of knowledge aren’t an excuse. They’re either born of denial and selfishness, or ignorance. And all of these can be worked on, adjusted and made healthy…if healthy is the true goal.

We say we love our dogs so much, and yet time and time again we set them up to fail by placing them in stressful, overwhelming, and fear-inducing situations. If we do indeed love them so deeply, perhaps it’s time we honored who our individual dogs are, what they do and don’t enjoy, and what they are and aren’t capable of. And perhaps top it off by becoming more deeply informed about what we personally do and don’t know…so we can break the chain of messing up the things we claim to love so much.

"A Swatara police officer was called to the Capital Diner this morning. An elderly man couldn't pay for his breakfast; he tried but his card was declined. He panicked and actually called the police on himself because he didn't know what to do. The restaurant gave him his space to figure it out and that was the best solution he could come up with. Officer Anthony Glass went to the counter, pulled out his credit card, and paid for the man's breakfast. The man asked for his phone number so he could pay him back but the officer kindly declined. This young man deserves to be recognized."

“This kid dialed 911 telling the dispatcher he was running away from home after an argument with him mother. This officer arrived talked to the kid and went into his bedroom which was empty outside of a deflated blowup bed. The young man essentially slept on the floor. The officer encouraged the boy to stay home. The child’s mother facing a tough financial hardship. The officer left and soon returning with a bed, a television and a game system. The child was elated beyond words. Not all angels wear wings! Thank you officer!!!!”
