Zelda & Draco LOVE to play, but they also know when it’s time to settle.

When we say “place,” it’s time to chill out and settle in. Having an off switch is SO important for dogs, whether they’re the only dog in the house or part of a multi dog household. They need to know when it’s time to play, and when it’s time to just be calm.

Two poodles & two different training tools 🐩🐩

The younger one, Everest, is on a prong because that’s what we recommend for clear communication and leash training.

The older one, Pearl, is on a harness because she already walks slowly and nicely for her older owners, so in her case, it works for what they need.

Different dogs, different situations. We’re not here to slap the same tool on every dog and call it good!

The goal is a dog that can actually be walked safely and confidently, with the ability to be corrected as needed.

Buddy is working on his loose leash walking skills! 🐾 He’s learning to walk calmly without pulling, and we’re using a slip lead to help him understand where we want him to be.

A slip lead is a leash that loops around the dog’s neck and tightens or loosens with the leash pressure. There’s no buckle or clip, it simply slips over the dog’s head. When used correctly, it gives the handler clear communication and makes it easier to reinforce good leash manners.

Lots of practice, lots of consistency, and Buddy is getting there! 💜

During our session with Tripper, we worked on being neutral around other dogs.

As a puppy, Tripper was attacked by different dogs likely contributing to him feeling insecure around other dogs. Look at him lying next to these two, with no issue! We’re so proud of you, Tripper! 💙

One of the best things you can teach your new puppy is how to be calm!

Puppy Morrigan is learning how to settle on a place cot, priming her to understand the difference between rest time and play time as she enters her crazy adolescence.

Combining a kennel and a place cot for your puppy management strategy will ease the drama of an over tired puppy, and build positive habits for years to come.

The best time to try out “settle” practice is when your dog is already a bit tired, after a play session, or whenever you notice that your dog is already in a more relaxed mood. The best point in your dog’s life to start is now!
