This is R***r, he is an 8 year old working line German Shepard. R***r’s exposure to people decreased significantly after his family moved to Maine about 5 years ago. This lack of exposure had a domino effect which turned into some serious reactivity and aggression. After attacking and successfully biting a family friend, R***r’s family contacted me.

After assessing him we made a plan to re-expose him to the world. For the last couple of months, we have worked on exposing him to people, noises, and novel situations while simultaneously keeping him under threshold. This has been his bread and butter.

In this video, you see us finally start to test this by slightly pushing the envelope with a very willing and brave kid. Although R***r reacted, we left on an AMAZING note after following the steps of desensitization. This kid was actually able to feed him treats by the end of the session!

I am BEYOND PROUD to share that R***rs family was successfully able to welcome a different family friend to their home following the process I laid out for them! Nothing fills my heart with joy like the stories I just described. I am so happy and proud of this family for their hard work and dedication to ā€œteach an old dog a new trick šŸ¤«ā€

ā—ļøLong Postā—ļø
If you’ve already demonized the use of e-collars, I encourage you to read this post with an open mind. Certain tools are 100% necessary for certain dogs.

E-collars are truly life-changing. We have had our foster dog, Kodie, for almost 3 months now.
First Month Goal — Make the experience as positive as possible. That being said, a positive experience doesn’t mean zero pressure.

Kodie exemplified serious anxiety, reactivity, and very clearly lacked structure. The first 6 weeks were extremely stressful for Kodie, yet we made progress. We were able to get him to eat, to open up, to get him to be comfortable. He has been one of the slowest progressing dogs I’ve ever worked with, then we introduced the e-collar.

Remember the goal, a positive experience. This meant positively condition the e-collar.

E-collar = good things are coming.

Every time Kodie ate, went for a walk, got treats or played, he was wearing the collar before it was ever even turned on. Positively associating the collar first allows the dog to better recognize their behaviors as causing this discomfort rather than the collar. This process, along with layering/pairing leash pressure with the e-collar essentially gives us the ability to create an invisible leash.

We are now about two weeks into using the e-collar with Kodie and the improvements we have seen are indescribable. He no longer pulls on leash, obeys a verbal recall about 95% of the time and has truly begun to show the ability to self soothe and settle without intervention.

I don’t know what Kodie’s life looked like before is, but I’m confident he spent his first 2 years of life practicing anxious behaviors daily with no direction: pacing around the house without settling, whining to no avail, barking at any sound/ trigger/ or novel item in sight or even out of sight, chasing reflections, attacking shadows, attempting to scale walls in pursuit of said shadows or reflections, and essentially no obedience or communication system in place to provide clarity to wanted and unwanted behaviors. Kodie has a lot of work to do, but the e-collar gives him a real chance at making consistent progress with clear communication.

ā—ļøDesensitization to touchā—ļø
Emmett has a history of biting in moments of discomfort — vet visits, removing him from the couch or car, switching collars, etc. This video shows the first steps of desensitizing touch, which we will then apply to other scenarios. Dogs are allowed to be uncomfortable, but aggression needs accountability and clarity to block these behaviors from continuing to happen.

Puppyhood is one of the most crucial periods to train your pup! A lot of people believe ā€œsocializationā€ for dogs means ā€œget my dogs involved with as many dogs and people as possibleā€ however, this can actually create unwanted behaviors. Puppy socialization is really ā€œexposure workā€.

Healthy exposure can look like this video, where Stanley is walking over different, unsteady surfaces so he can build confidence and coping skills through being exposed to minor stress. It builds resilience later in life!

The most important part of exposure work is the QUALITY of the exposure, NOT the quantity!

Teaching Kodi’s awesome parents about his recall command while using an E-Collar after Kodi spent 2 weeks in our Board and Train Program! Understanding how/when to correctly use positive and negative markers to reinforce commands is the key to consistent communication with your dog šŸ‘šŸ¼
