FLEAS & TICKS ARE NO JOKE FOR PETS!
They often live in tall grass and wooded areas very similar to our foothills—especially around this time of year. Help keep your pets safe by maintaining your yard, checking your pets for fleas and ticks regularly, vacuum your rugs often and check their bedding for any infestation. Best of all, use preventives such as oral or topical flea & tick medications as recommended by your veterinarian. For any questions call Wolf Creek Veterinary Hospital at (530)477-5683

You Got A New Kitten! Now What? Congratulations on your new furry family member! Now that you’ve taken over a hundred cute photos and given your kitten a name that fits their personality, here are a few easy tips to help you (and your kitten) start off on the right paw:

1. Set Up Their Space
Create a quiet, cozy area with a soft bed, food/water bowls, and a litter box (away from the food!). Add a few toys, a scratching post, and a safe spot to hide — kittens love to explore and nap.

2. Feeding Time
Choose high-quality kitten food (wet or dry) made specifically for growing cats (for the nutrients they need). Keep fresh water available at all times. Treats are fine, but in moderation — think of them as rewards for training and bonding!

3. Veterinary Visits & Care
Schedule your first vet check-up early to discuss vaccines, deworming, and flea prevention. Ask about microchipping, planning the best timing for spaying/neutering your pet for safety and keep your vet’s number handy for any questions.

Halloween may be a treat for kids and adults, but not for our pets! With bowls of candy on tables and treat bags within paw’s reach, the holiday becomes dangerous for curious dogs—especially when it comes to chocolate. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, two compounds that are highly toxic to pets. Even small amounts can lead to vomiting, tremors, seizures… even death. Dark and baking chocolates are especially dangerous due to their high theobromine content. Since your pets can easily sniff out sweets, it’s crucial to keep all candy securely out of reach and tell your family members not to share treats with pets. If you suspect your pet has eaten chocolate, contact your vet immediately—quick action can save their life.

This adopted little love bug, Tori (a cocker spaniel), came to us with an interesting story. She had been adopted by her owners through the Second Chance Cocker Rescue years ago when they heard an elderly woman with Alzheimer’s could no longer care for her beloved pet. Roughly six years old when adopted, Tori needed to have her remaining teeth removed as the previous owner could not maintain her dental health. The owners say she has been a great addition to their family ever since. As we’ve followed Tori through her wellness visits here at Wolf Creek Veterinary Hospital, she has slowly gone through some hearing loss and other typical age-related joint pain and arthritis symptoms for a senior dog but it doesn’t stop her from being her curious, happy self. She recently started on a liquid oral medicine (one of several treatment options available for seniors) to help with her symptoms and we hear Tori’s had improvements in her mobility in such a short time since she’s started taking it —— making her 14 and fabulous!

ACTUAL PATIENT (Zoey, Lab): Had the tummy itchees & scratchees. Mom said I was so good at the vet that she gibbed me extra treats all week. For the record… Zoey really got medicine disguised in her “extra treats” to make her better.
