Sue B Horses & Training

Sue B Horses & Training Experienced Riding Instructor/Horse Trainer offering lessons and training to all ages/skills. Limite I have helped children and adults learn to ride.

I started riding horses at a very young age and through self-discipline, opportunity, and desire, I learned as much as I could about riding and training across multiple disciplines. I have shown on the national level in cowhorse, cutting, and reining competition and more recently have competed locally in roping and barrel racing. I established a local gymkhana series and have helped many kids in t

he various events. One of my favorite things is watching kids develop as a rider and learn to communicate more effectively with their horses. There's nothing better than watching a 1000+ lb animal with its own mind, run full speed across an arena and listen to the cues of a 60 lb child sitting on their back. I love to help people be better communicators with their horses. Whether you are just starting out and don't know a saddle horn from a cantle, or whether you have ridden for years, I would love to connect and work with you and your horse. Maybe you don't even have a horse, but want to learn to ride and care for one...I can help with that too.

This short post is so important!
One of the first things I do when I get a new student is to evaluate their tack and equipment. There is so much garbage tack being manufactured today, many by companies that don't know the a** end of a horse from the head! I see it mostly in the speed events where people purchase "designer" tack and equipment simply because it looks cool or pretty, but I have seen headstalls with no browband or earpiece falling down the horse's neck, buckles in the eyeball, upside down bits, backwards bits, bits hanging too low in the mouth and banging the teeth, ears and brow areas being squeezed because of too tight a fit, etc etc. PLEASE don't purchase tack for the looks. PLEASE talk to a professional who is well-versed in tack and equipment fit. Set you and your horse up for SUCCESS by understanding the tools that you're going to use. Don't use something just because someone told you it's the best or just because it's pretty. Be sure it's the best set up for YOUR HORSE.
Also...just because something is expensive, does not mean it's good quality or fit!

A little delayed in posting this, but BIG shout out to Dr Corey Harms of Sierra Oaks Veterinary - Equine Services for saving my old gelding…. Many of you know and love ā€œSpiderman.ā€
Dr. Harms pulled this rather large enterolith out of his re**um. He told me that usually they don’t pass them when they’re this size. I don’t know how Spiderman did it, but it was an all day affair… walking and walking and trotting and pain meds and TWO tubings with mineral oil (thanks to Dr. Ettlin for the first round!)
I am so glad to still have this old guy around for a few more years hopefully. He’s 26 this year and still going strong teaching kids to ride, being my backup horse at brandings, and we try to keep him slow at the gymkhanas (slow is not in his vocabulary).

Mind set is everything when it comes to competing. This was a hard lesson for me to learn…I’m ultra competitive and i don’t like to ā€œloseā€ or ā€œmess up.ā€
I had to do just that to learn to barrel race. I’ve made plenty of mistakes…. Every one has led me to where i am today. I’m a better rider for each and every ā€œmistakeā€ and ā€œfailure.ā€

Join me on Wednesday nights at 6:30. Would love to share the tips that have made me a better horsewoman. PM or text me for location!
