The holiday season often presents unique hazards for pets that may require urgent veterinary attention.
Common emergencies include:

🧈 Gastrointestinal Issues:
🦃 Pancreatitis: Triggered by rich, fatty human foods like turkey skin or gravy.
🦴 Bone Ingestion: Cooked bones can splinter, causing internal blockages or tears.
🍽️ Food Bloat: Rapid or excessive eating, which can be life-threatening.

☠️ Toxicity/Poisoning:
🧂 Toxic Foods: Ingestion of items like chocolate 🍫, onions 🧅, garlic, grapes 🍇, raisins, alcohol 🍾, and foods containing xylitol (a sugar substitute).
🪴 Toxic Plants: Chewing on holiday plants such as holly 🌿, mistletoe, or lilies.
🧪 Chemical Exposure: Ingestion of antifreeze or ice-melt products. ❄️

🎁 Foreign Body Obstruction:
✨ Swallowing non-food items like tinsel, ribbon 🎀, small ornaments, or batteries 🔋, which can cause life-threatening intestinal blockages.

👻🎃 Happy Howl-o-ween from Brunswick Veterinary Clinic! 🎃👻

While we love seeing your furry friends in their adorable costumes, Halloween can pose some serious safety risks for our beloved pets. To help ensure a fun and safe night for everyone, here are some important reminders:

🍬 Chocolate & Candy are a BIG No-No: Most Halloween candies, especially chocolate, are toxic to cats and dogs. Sugar-free treats containing xylitol are also extremely dangerous. Keep all candy out of paw's reach! Wrappers and candy can also cause choking or internal obstructions.

🍇 Grapes & Raisins: Often found in snack mixes or as part of healthy Halloween treats, grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in pets.

💡 Glow Sticks: While fun for kids, the liquid inside glow sticks can cause irritation, pain, and excessive drooling if ingested by curious pets.

🕯️ Decorations such as candles, string lights, or small decor items can be tempting to chew on, leading to burns, electric shock, or foreign body ingestion.

👻 Costumes can be fun, ensure they are comfortable, allow for full range of motion, and don't have small parts that can be chewed off. Supervise your pet while they're dressed up.

🎃 Keep Pets Secure: The constant opening of doors can be a great escape opportunity for pets. Consider keeping them in a quiet, secure room away from the front door during peak trick-or-treating hours.

Fritter came to Brunswick Veterinary Clinic in November because she was vomiting and not eating. She was diagnosed with a rare condition where her abdominal organs pass through her diaphragm into the sac around her heart. X-rays showed that she also had a foreign body obstructing her gastrointestinal tract. Her congenital condition caused complications during surgery, however with quick action from our technicians, Dr. Williams was able to remove her foreign body and she is back home to enjoy the holidays with her family. 🐈
