I’m not sure why in the western world it’s taboo to take a lesson.

I went and took a lesson with Crazy H Performance Horses last night and it was great! I learned some new things, I remembered some things I haven’t worked on in a while, I bounced ideas and problems and just overall had a great time!

It takes a village. Literally one small adjustment can be the difference between the 1D and the 2D.

Never stop learning and never be afraid to ask for help. We need to be open minded at ALL levels.

Even Olympic riders have trainers. No matter how much you win, there is always more to learn.

Sometimes a small adjustment can change everything.

There are times that something as simple as hand placement on a rein or adjusting your weight in a stirrup will change the way a horse works.

We don’t always need to have a new drill or a new bit or some crazy new fad.

Sometimes it is just simple horsemanship and looking at cause and effect.

⁣Intentional goal setting can be a very productive practice. With our compass set, we strike out to achieve our goals as fast as we possibly can. Once achieved, we set our goals even higher, recalibrate the compass for our new heading, and we go at it again. ⁣
⁣⁣
⁣I feel like most of the memorable moments that happen along our journey are never planned. They show up when we allow ourselves and our curiosity to explore. Often leading us down a path that even our most conscious self could’ve never imagined. As ambitious people, we set very high goals and live with strict disciplines to achieve those goals, which is why we are very successful, but where’s the flavor..? After a while, the experience of living becomes more valuable than any goal achieved. The experiences of lessons learned and the people you unexpectedly meet along the way are essential to living a fulfilled life. ⁣

⁣Most everyone has felt the feeling of being lost at some point in their life. Nobody has everything 100% figured out and if they say they do, they’re lying to themselves and to you. And if they truly believe they do, they are simply placing limits on themselves. Our conscious mind can only comprehend a fraction of our true potential. ⁣
⁣⁣
⁣Embarking on the journey from the person you are today to the person you wish to become, you are sure to get lost along the way, and that it is ok. That feeling of being lost should let you know you’re on the right track of truly experiencing life. If we knew that everything that happened in our life was the absolute best thing for us at that moment, would we allow ourselves to enjoy each situation..?⁣

Horse training is all about balance. Too much pressure is never good, but not enough makes it hard to progress. Finding the balance between too much and not enough can be difficult and varies for each horse but it is so important.

I am at a very repetitive point with my 2024 prospects. We go through the same motions pretty much every day learning how to use their bodies and become strong enough to do the task at hand. It is crucial to occasionally push them past their “comfort zone” and work them through the uncomfortable. I don’t do this everyday, but when I feel they are getting comfortable where we are, I step up to the next level and work through it, then back down, then back up again a few days later, and so on…

This teaches my horses to how to get “comfortable with the uncomfortable” and work through pressure without panicking. When we add more pressure they will usually make mistakes and some will get a little panicked or flighty.

How you respond to this means EVERYTHING.

You need to be the constant—the one they can trust when they are uncomfortable. Then they will come back to your hands even when they are afraid. This will be very beneficial when they start competing. I already know my horses are likely to make mistakes when leveling up, so instead of reprimanding them for it I remain calm and simply show them the right way and then try again.

Listen to your horses, they will tell you when they are ready!
