Every now and then a dog reminds you why you love teaching Basic Obedience.
I’ll be honest, after training so many dogs, it’s easy to get a little burned out on the day-to-day obedience work. Then a dog like Cardi, a sharp Doberman with an outstanding attitude, comes along and reminds you just how rewarding it can be.
One thing this has reinforced for me is how important good breeding and early development can be. When a puppy starts with solid genetics, then goes through a structured Puppy Headstart program followed by Basic Obedience, you’re stacking the deck in favor of success. Clear communication, consistency, and a willing attitude make it much easier to build the reliable companion every owner hopes for.
That doesn’t mean dogs from shelters, rescues, or other backgrounds can’t become incredible companions. We’ve worked with many that have. Every dog is an individual.
But for the clients who specifically want to start with a purpose-bred puppy and are committed to seeing the training process through, it often gives us the best opportunity to produce the consistent results we’re all working toward.
Dogs like Cardi are a good reminder that great training starts with a combination of genetics, early guidance, and owners who are willing to put in the work. That’s a combination that never gets old.
