Am I the last one left without a furever home? How can that be? I’m such a good boy!

Is there a task that requires zero puppies? I’m going to help anyway!

Don’t you want a companion to follow you room to room? I do that!

Do you need someone to crash out on the couch while you yell at the Phillies every night? I’m your guy!

Looking for someone who doesn’t p*e on the floor anymore? That’s me!

Not big on long walks on the beach? (Or around the neighborhood) me either!

Just a pup, waiting on a family.

Interested in adding a puppy to your family?

We often hear, ā€œWe met the puppies and fell in love with this one!ā€

And while we absolutely understand the puppy fever, choosing a puppy should be about more than which one is the cutest or the one who ran straight into your lap.

When you meet a puppy you are considering adopting, slow down and watch them. Their behavior can tell you a lot.

šŸ‘€ Look at how they interact with people:
Do they approach willingly? Are they comfortable being handled? Do they seek affection, or are they more independent? There is no single ā€œperfectā€ personality, but you want to consider what fits your household.

🐶 Watch how they interact with other puppies:
Are they overly pushy? Do they respect corrections from other dogs? Are they easily overwhelmed? Do they enjoy play but know how to settle?

🧠 Pay attention to how they respond to new things:
A puppy doesn’t need to be completely fearless, but notice how they handle unfamiliar people, sounds, surfaces, environments and experiences. Do they recover quickly after being startled?

🤲 Handle them gently:
Touch their ears, paws and body. Pick them up if appropriate. See how they respond to normal handling. This is especially important if you have children who will be interacting with the puppy.

⚔ Look beyond the energy level you see in that moment:
The wild, crazy puppy who is bouncing off the walls may be adorable—but are you prepared for that energy every single day? Conversely, the quiet puppy sleeping in the corner isn’t necessarily going to be a couch potato forever.

šŸ›‘ Watch for frustration and impulse control:
Does the puppy immediately bite harder when redirected? Can they disengage from a toy? Do they recover after being told ā€œnoā€ or redirected?

Think about your lifestyle—not just your heart šŸ’›

Ask yourself:

* Does this puppy’s temperament fit our household?
* Do we have the time and patience for puppy training?
* What energy level can we realistically handle?
* Do we have children, cats or other dogs to consider?
* Are we prepared for teething, accidents, chewing and sleepless nights?
* Are we willing to continue training and socialization for months—not just during the cute puppy stage?

And most importantly…

Don’t choose a puppy simply because they chose you.

That puppy climbing into your lap and giving you those irresistible puppy-dog eyes can absolutely steal your heart. But adoption should be a good match for both of you.

There is no ā€œbadā€ puppy because a puppy isn’t the right fit for your home. There is only a puppy whose needs may not match your lifestyle.

The goal isn’t to find the cutest puppy.

The goal is to find the puppy whose personality, temperament, energy and needs fit the life you can provide.

And remember—what you see during a 20-minute meet-and-greet is only a snapshot. Puppies are still developing, and genetics, environment, training and continued socialization all play a role in who they become.

Choose with your heart AND your head šŸ’›

Nova is still waiting for her forever family! 🐾

Nova is a sweet Pitty mix puppy who just can’t understand why she hasn’t gotten any applications yetšŸ’”

Her foster says she is the sweetest girl, and she’s proving every day just how smart she is! Nova is a quick learner, eager to please, and is already house broken so far!

She’s learning more every day and would love nothing more than a family of her own to continue growing and thriving with. ā¤ļø

I know we are supposed to be ā€œprofessional.ā€

Rescuers are supposed to take on all of the hard stuff with a smile on our faces. We’re supposed to absorb the sadness, the anger, the returns, the heartbreak, the frustration—and never say a word. Because the second we show an actual human emotion, suddenly we’re ā€œunprofessional,ā€ we’re a ā€œbitch,ā€ or we need to ā€œget off our soapbox.ā€

But you know what?

Sometimes we are fu***ng angry.

It is heartbreaking and infuriating to bring a puppy or dog into rescue, give them a safe place to land, a warm bed, food, medical care, training, structure, boundaries, love and every opportunity to succeed—and then trust someone else to continue that work.

And then they don’t.

They don’t provide training.
They don’t provide boundaries.
They don’t provide structure.
They ignore the warning signs.
They excuse the behavior.
They do nothing when the dog is struggling.

And then that dog escalates.

The dog has bitten multiple people.
The dog has gone after other dogs in the home.
The dog has begun resource guarding ā€œout of nowhereā€

And still, no meaningful action was taken.

And now the dog pays the ultimate price for someone else’s ignorance, negligence and irresponsibility.

That is the part that absolutely breaks me.

Because the dog didn’t ask for this. The dog didn’t choose to be untrained. The dog didn’t choose to be ignored. The dog didn’t choose to be put in situations they weren’t equipped to handle.

And yet the dog is the one who loses their life.

Then, when rescuers speak up about it—when we say that this could have been prevented, when we express our anger and frustration—we’re told to shut up. We’re called names. We’re told to f**k off and get off our soapbox.

No.

I’m not getting off my soapbox.

Because sometimes the uncomfortable truth needs to be said.

Rescue isn’t just about saving a dog. It is about taking responsibility for that dog after you bring them home.

Adopting a dog means committing to their needs—not just when they are cute, easy and well-behaved, but when they are difficult. When they need training. When they need boundaries. When they need professional help. When they need you to step up instead of making excuses.

Because when you don’t, sometimes the dog pays for it with their life.

And I will never be okay with that.

I will never stop being angry about it.

And I will never apologize for caring enough to say so.
