Horse Shelter Heroes is one of my favorite things to watch on TV. Good people, wonderful cause, honest real life videos! A worthy place to donate if you care about animals, especially horses and all equines. Find out more about what too often happens to animals, especially horses..when folks decide "Let's buy a horse"! ..and then they discover they don't know what they are doing..about feeding, behavior and training, health and hoof care, etc. There is so much to learn about taking care of a horse! And it can be overwhelming as well as expensive!
Too many neglected equines end up at a livestock auctions..
But maybe that sounds like a normal way to sell a large animal that you can"t keep anymore, and of course if someone pays good money for your horse, you would assume they will value their purchase and take care of it!
WRONG! Too many are bought by agents who then contract with their meat companies in Mexico and Canada (it's illegal to slaughter horses for consumption in the USA!). The horses bought by the "kill buyers" are crowded into semi trucks and travel to the slaughter houses outside of the US!
It is not a pleasant ride.. on the road for many days crammed together. and the terror as they enter the death chambers, is almost too much to even imagine!
This is what is known as "The Slaughter Pipeline!"
This reality show is so informative..I've had trail riding horses much of my life..but wasn't into hardcore horsey circles. I didn't know anything about this atrocity until I started watching this reality show. NOW I KNOW!
On the upside..it is such a positive horse program. They buy unwanted and suffering horses..(making the kill buyers furious) and then take them home, give them the farrier care and veterinarian care they need or sometimes "The Last Act of Kindness" if constant pain and suffering can't be stopped.
It's shameful how many crippled, blind, emaciated horses that are in severe chronic pain can be found going through repeat auctions!..just to make a couple bucks!
When they are safely home, they are fed well on good hay and pasture and whatever extra they need..and with time, good nutrition and love and care, many get healthy and If they need it they are gentled and trained, so they can find good homes through a responsible adoption process! Some are old, or disabled for riding, but there are many folks who love having them as pasture pets, to love on, to pet and groom,, and watch their horse(s) be happy!
Please watch and subscribe to their Youtube channel..be informed, and share with others if you care about suffering animals!
And donate if you are inspired!
