“I won’t buy a weanling for that”
Let’s do some basic math for what the cost is in MY area:
Feeding the mare and stallion for a year = $3500
Vaccines for both = $150
Mineral and salt for the year = $540
Farrier for the year for both $600
Dewormer =$150
Ultrasounds for the mare after breeding $200-$300
So just to get the foal on the ground, we are at $5200 on the LOW end with no extra vet expenses 🤪
If you purchase a stud fee and do AI, it’s even MORE.
Now add in any emergency vet care for when the foal is born or throughout the year, IgG testing, registration papers (the cost of this has gone up to nearly $200 a foal without any colour testing), vaccines for the foal, dewormer, and grain.
Not to mention all the time put in training and handling the foal so it’s a civilized member of society that has the basic knowledge of life so the new owner is not getting something feral and terrified of people that wants to jump a fence or climb a wall to get away from you.
If you want something cheap, my page is probably not the place for you 😅
There are plenty of breeders that probably don’t vaccinate, deworm, trim feet, or handle their babies and will sell their foals cheaper.. thats not me nor will it ever be. Broodmares and stallions should get the same level of care as any horse used for riding or competition.
I’ve devoted so much sweat and tears into my program to raise the best APHA foals I can that are amateur friendly and can go in many different directions. I’ve found mares that cross well with my stallion to produce foals that are easy to work with and be around so that people actually enjoy owning them.
Thinking I should sell them for $1000 or being rude will likely end up with me keeping your name on a list and not ever selling you a foal 🤗
On another note, I have no problem leaving mares open and not breeding if I have foals left to sell from the year before. Im not going to just dump them to produce more. I do this for the love of the horse and bettering them. If there comes a time where I can’t give them everything they require and care starts lacking, then I would stop breeding all together.
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk 🤪
