Last week we shared the blueprint of our first shelter constructed in 1938 by the City of Grand Rapids. In 1940, Kent County began leasing the building from the city, thereby establishing its first animal shelter department. Check out the photo below of a group of individuals visiting with some pets at the shelter in 1940.

UPDATE: We asked and you delivered! Thank you sooo much for all of the donations we've received from this post! We are happy to announce that we are full of peanut butter and broth and our dogs will be set for the next several months. Thank you to everyone who sent us gifts!!!!

Hey friends! Can you help us out at the Kent County Animal Shelter?

We're down to our LAST 2 cans of broth and running seriously low on peanut butter – two essentials for our daily in kennel edible enrichment program! One of the many forms of enrichment we provide to pets in the shelter.

Here's how we use these supplies:
Broth (Chicken , Beef, Vegetable) helps us create pupsicles, pup cups, and food toppers to encourage stressed or sick dogs to eat, or to soften kibble when needed. Peanut butter fills KONGs, makes pup cups and PB pizza plates, and helps us give medications to our dogs.

Our amazing volunteers and staff create enrichment items weekly and keep our freezer stocked! In-kennel enrichment is given just before quiet hours. This is a crucial part of our animals daily routine when they can rest and enjoy tasty, brain-engaging snacks without interruption. Some dogs who are struggling with shelter life receive extra enrichment later in the day as well.

We distribute 40-50 enrichment items daily, rotating types and ingredients to keep things interesting. Variety is key – giving the same thing every day isn't truly enriching!

Why enrichment in the animal shelter matters:
Enrichment reduces stress and promotes positive emotional states by engaging dogs' minds, bodies, and senses. This isn't just about keeping them busy – it's about maintaining their mental health and helping them show their true personalities to potential adopters.

Help us restock our enrichment shelf and keep our dogs happy and healthy – mentally and physically – while they wait for their forever homes.

Donations can be dropped off directly at the Kent County Animal Shelter, we have a donation bin at the main entrance of the shelter.

To begin, we would like to share the blueprint of our first shelter. This document is available at the Grand Rapids City Archives and Research Center. In 1938, the City of Grand Rapids constructed a new animal shelter at 133 Market Ave SW, close to what would later become the US 131 river overpass. A couple of years later, in 1940, Kent County began leasing the building from the city, thereby establishing its first animal shelter department.

We just wanted to thank our incredible volunteers for…well…everything. But today, we especially want to thank them for sponsoring AJ’s full adoption fee ❤️🥹

Volunteers not only picked AJ because he’s a Darling Angel Baby™️, but also because he’s the perfect mix of snuggle and energy, he’s well mannered (unless he’s SUPER excited to meet you 😌), and is quite a gentleman with other pups.

AJ is about 1.5 years old, neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and waiting for his forever home, thanks to our wonderful KCAS volunteers 🥰

Today is National Check the Chip Day!

Did you know that when an animal arrives Kent County Animal Shelter, it is scanned for a microchip? If a microchip is found, shelter staff will email, text, call, and send a letter to the registered owner. Unfortunately, every year, many animals arrive at the shelter with outdated owner information on their microchips, preventing owners from receiving notifications about their lost pets.

To help address this issue, the Kent County Animal Shelter has created two 24-hour microchip scanning stations available to the public. One station is located outside the intake doors of the shelter, and the other is at the Kent County North Campus, located at 4191 17 Mile Rd NE, Cedar Springs, MI.

If you find a lost pet, you can easily scan it for a microchip and assist in reuniting it with its family. If you are a pet owner, we encourage you to scan your pet, contact your microchip company, and ensure that your information is up to date.

Please take the time to CHECK YOUR CHIP! If your pet does not have a microchip, we recommend that you get one. You can learn how to get your pet microchipped here: https://www.kentcountymi.gov/172/Resources

Remember, the best place for your pet is at home, by your side. Microchips are essential tools that can help you reunite with your lost pet more quickly!
