You need this skill!

Leave it is such an important skill for all dog owners, but especially owners with young kids!

They may drop grapes, vitamins, medications, and more that could be dangerous for your dog to consume!

Here’s how to start this skill:
1️⃣ Have a low value treat or kibble on the ground with your hand covering it. Say ‘leave it’ and then “yes” the moment your dog moves away or turns away from the food and reward with another treat (higher value ideally).

2️⃣ Once step 1 is easy, you can start to make your hand into a cage over the kibble/treat on the ground. The food is slightly more visible to your dog now. You will say “leave it” and as soon as they disengage, “yes” and treat. If they try to get to the food, close your hand over food.

3️⃣ Once step 2 is easy, you will have the food sitting on the floor with full visibility. When you set the food on the ground, you will say “leave it” and “yes” and treat for disengagement. If your dog goes towards the food, close your hand over it like in step 1.

4️⃣ Now you will drop a treat on the ground (ideally closer to you and away from your dog so you can easily cover it, if they try to go for it). As you drop the treat, say “leave it” and “yes” and treat for disengagement.

TIP: Look for your dog to look away from the food on the ground. (Up, to the side, to you, etc). We don’t want them just to back up and stare at it.

TIP: Make sure your dog NEVER gets the food we are asking them to leave, that way you can use this skill in an emergency if needed.

💿 Save these tips for later training and share with a friend who could use these tips with their pup!

If your dog rushes the fence, scans the yard, or barks at every passing sound, they may need help learning what TO do outside. Not just being told what NOT to do.

A backyard sniffari gives your dog:
🐾 A calming, natural activity
🐾 A positive association with outside stimuli
🐾 An outlet for mental enrichment
🐾 A way to disengage from scanning and reacting

Instead of rehearsing barking, we can rehearse sniffing, exploring, and searching.

Here’s how:
🐾 Scatter treats or your pup’s meal in the grass
🐾 Toss food away from triggers
🐾 Hide treats around the yard
🐾 Let your dog move at their own pace

The goal isn’t distraction. It’s helping your dog feel better and make different choices outside.

Aging doesn’t have to be mean adventures have to stop.

Yes, there may need to be new restrictions added to help keep your dog as healthy as possible, but we can still adventure!

My dog, Emmy, is a highly active 8-year-old GSD/ACD/ Rat Terrier Mix who has mild arthritis in her hips.

Here are some things we are doing to keep her healthy, strong, and comfortable as she ages:

1️⃣ Good communication with our vet team about any changes that occur (a gait change, tightness, etc.)

2️⃣ Joint supplements and muscle supplements approved by our vet team.

3️⃣ Rugs on wood flooring to help with traction now before traction may be difficult.

4️⃣ Providing ramps or stairs to beds or higher furniture to limit jumping up and down for impact on the joints. For us, she is getting picked up in and out of the car now.

5️⃣ Restricting off leash adventures. This is our biggest change, but girly is a chaos queen when she runs. The chaotic movements and fast turns can cause a lot of impact on the joints. Instead, we’re opting for on leash walks in various settings for more controlled movements.

6️⃣ Strength training! This one is HUGE! Just like with humans, strength training is essential in keeping muscles strong for our pups. We have a prescribed strength training plan to support our goals that we do daily.

7️⃣ Healthy diet and lean weight. Watching our dog’s weight is essential. Extra weight causes more stress on our dog’s joints.

8️⃣ Modalities-we’re utilizing acupuncture and a PEMF mat to support with releasing tightness, reducing inflammation, and supporting with pain.

9️⃣ Pain medication prescribed as needed by vet team.

There are so many options to help our dogs as they age and activities that aren’t high impact that our dogs can still enjoy such as sniffy walks, scentwork, low impact trick training, and so much more!

Don’t hesitate to reach out to your dog’s vet team for support for your senior pup!
