Keep the holidays joy-filled and accident free by being prepared for the dangers this season can bring:
FOOD
Buffets and misplaced dishes make food easy to grab during parties. Many of our favorite dishes include items dogs should NOT be getting like chocolate and caffeine, grapes, onions and garlic, alcohol, etc. Keep a good eye one your dog when the food is out (or put them away)! If you’d like them to have a treat, prep something ahead of time so you know it’s safe and you can point your family member who “has” to feed your dog in that direction.
PLANTS
Although it’s pretty, greenery can be bad news like yew, holly, poinsettias, Christmas tree water (looking at you Griswold’s), and more. Be aware of what you are bringing in the house and keep plants well out of reach. Do not leave dogs unsupervised with access to harmful plants.
SCENTED PRODUCTS
We all want that cozy holiday smell, but just because it’s natural doesn’t make it safe. Research first before something gets lit, plugged-in, or diffused. Same goes for cleaning products.
STRESSFUL GATHERINGS
Large groups, loud and grabby people, and fast moving kids can be overwhelming to your pup. Overwhelmed dogs + less space to move = a potential bite. Pay close attention to your dog and offer them breaks and quiet time if they need it.
Lastly… HALLMARK MOVIE MARATHONS
We are also suckers for a cheesy holiday movie! But remember that just because we find ourselves wrapped in holiday cheer and busyness, doesn’t mean our dogs’ needs magically disappear. Set aside time for your dog to get an outlet and be sure to offer special enrichment activities to make up for the distractedness this time can bring.
MORE TIPS:
🐾Start training now for what will help this season go by more safely and smoothly! This might be socialization, confidence building, crate, muzzle, or place training.
🐾Set up a play date BEFORE the big party to introduce dogs so there’s less commotion and more ability to monitor interactions.
🐾Save the ASPCA Poison Control number in your phone: 888-426-4435
🐾Locate your nearest urgent care and emergency vet offices and know their hours of operation.
Celebrate safely!
