I received an inbox message inquiring about how I keep pests (insects) away from my cool weather veggies (kale, collards, lettuce, etc.) in the summer.

Answer: I look forward to several cool weather crop harvests in late spring, summer, and early fall in zone 6A. In order to get successful harvests, I use a variety of pest control methods. Through early to mid-June there are typically no pests due to cooler weather. During mid to late June, I release live ladybugs in my garden. They eat insects like aphids and cabbage worms, the pests that attack and devour cool weather veggies. I also manually check for cabbage worms daily and destroy them when located. In early July, I plant herbs with loud smells: lavender, thyme, basil, dill, and rosemary in my cool weather crop garden beds.

Some insects hate loud smells and others are attracted to them. The insects that are attracted to loud smells and typically devour cool weather crops are diverted to “trap crops” in my garden (the aforementioned herbs). I plant those herbs in the same beds as my cool weather crops and the pest insects feast on those instead of my leafy greens.

I understand that these methods are labor intense at times; however, in the end, I get to enjoy the fruits of my labor instead of the wack a$$ insects.
