Grooming fun facts #4 (sorry I missed last week!!)
Today we talk about matted coats. To De-mat or not. . THAT is the question.

We(all too often) hear people, on social media, outraged because their fluffy dog got shaved. Why do we shave dogs? When your dogs coat isn't maintained properly, the fur builds up or the hair twists into tangles that form mats. There's commonly 2 different kinds of coats on most dogs... the undercoat... and the outer layer which is usually more coarse. Undercoat tends to shed out year round.. that's the softer coat underneath the top layer. When it isn't brushed out regularly, it can build up and getting thick and chunky and often matting up underneath. Breeds without undercoat, grow hair like ours that needs regular brushing or will form tangled hair that turn to dreadlocks.
Both of these situations require attention as matted fur doesn't allow the skin to breathe, leaving your pet susceptible to hot spots, sores, and other skin issues.
Brushing them out isn't as simple as it sounds. Sometimes packed in fur can be brushed/ blown out and then once the coat is clear and clean, regular maintenence can be resumed. Sometimes, the coat can't be saved and must be shaved.
Severe matting or dreadlocks... usually need to be cut or shaved out. We try our best and if we can slowly brush them out, we will. Otherwise, it can be painful and tedious taking much longer. I promise you.. your dog doesn't want to stand on my table longer than necessary. When grooming is painful, they don't enjoy coming in and behavior can and will be affected. Fur/ hair grows fast. Why cause unnecessary pain when clipping the pet down is less stressful and the results are temporary.
This is all preventable by simply maintaining your pet between appts. I'm happy to show you how or to direct you to the right brush/ combs to achieve this. Feel free to ask anytime!!
Have an amazing Sunday, yall.... and GO BRUSH YOUR DOG!!🐾❤️🐾

Grooming fun facts #3
What's the big deal with Merle (M Allele)coloring??
I'm sure you've all seen the dogs with mottled colored coats.. usually dark gray, black and white or brown, tan and white. If you've seen my Phoenix... she is Merle colored.
While some breeds have naturally occuring Merle... most breeds that you see have had it bred into their line. If you're breed does not have naturally occurring Merle, and is Merle colored... you have a mixed breed. Schnauzers do not come in Merle. Poodles do not come in Merle. Pomeranian do not come in Merle. FRENCHIES DO NOT COME IN MERLE.
Australian Shepherds DO come in Merle. Old English Sheepdogs come in Merle. Catahoula and shelties also have naturally occurring Merle.
Here's the dangerous part of having Merle colored dogs. You can NOT breed 2 Merle dogs together. This is called "Double Merle". This causes many birth defects including shunts, deafness, blindness and temperament issues, among other problems. Some dogs can even be solid colored and carry a hidden Merle gene that will show up and cause issues if bred with a Merle. This is why testing before breeding is so important!!!!
With this being said- Merle is my favorite color and I DO have a cross bred schnauzer that I love more than life.
Anyways... Happy Sunday and GO BRUSH YOUR DOGS!❤️🐾❤️

Grooming fun facts #2
Let's talk about A**l Glands!!
Who is responsible for emptying them... what are they... and why do they need emptying/expressed?
A**l glands are two fluid filled sacs located on the a**s of your pet. Before they were domesticated, they used these to scent mark territory. When they have normal stool these sacs empty when passing stool. When the stool is soft.. they don't push the sacs to release, causing the fluid to build up. This can cause an abcess if the sac builds up or bacteria overgrows.
There has been arguments since the beginning of time(lol)as to whether your vet or your groomer should empty these. An experienced groomer should have no problem releasing (normal and not infected)glands in the tub but you should make sure your groomer is comfortable with that. Not all are. In that case, your vet can take care of that issue with no problem. In many overweight pets you can not easily access the glands and they need internally released.. that is a vet job, not a groomers. I am comfortable emptying glands. If I feel there is an infection or that it needs internally emptied.. I'll refer you to your vet!!!
Thanks for reading... now go brush your dogs!! 😉❤️🐾❤️

Grooming fun facts #1

"My breeder said my doodle doesn't shed so it's hypoallergenic"

Technically.. no dogs are hypoallergenic. Most pet allergies come from dander which all dogs/ cats have. Including Sphinx and other hairless breeds. While regular bathing can help keep dander at bay...it won't completely rid your pet of tiny flakes recurring. Skin naturally sheds dander year round.

Also.. doodles are a mix of two different breeds.. one of which is usually a golden retriever. Or sometimes Bernese Mountain dogs, Sheepdogs, and Australian Shepherds. All of these breeds shed undercoat. When mixed with the curly hair of a Poodle, this undercoat winds up in the curls. So while you may not necessarily see the shedding...its matting up in the coat. This is why Doodles require frequent grooming with home maintenance. Trust me they are a lot of work!!!
With that being said... Doodles are really nice dogs with mostly mild personalities and a happy go lucky kind of disposition!!!
Happy Sunday yall🐾 Don't forget to brush your dogs!!
