Twisted Tales 017A 1940
Winding through the island’s heart, these lanes are shaded by **centuries-old live oaks**, their limbs twisted and bowed by storms and salt, yet still standing like sentinels. The foliage is thick and tangled—hackberry, sweet bay, and even the occasional toothache tree, whose leaves were once chewed for their numbing effect. In spring, native irises bloom in bursts of violet along the boardwalks, and the air hums with the rustle of migrating birds seeking refuge after their long flight across the Gulf.
Tucked beneath these oaks are **weathered homes**, some dating back to the late 1800s. Their wood frames lean with age, porches sagging gently, but they carry stories in every nail and floorboard. One such house, framed by oaks, still holds an antique four-poster bed that arrived by boat—a relic of a slower, saltier time. Helen Winans is outside talking with a local.
Post Lane is a favorite—lined with oaks and dotted with historic homes, it feels like stepping into a sepia-toned photograph. The trees don’t just shade the homes; they’ve shielded them from hurricanes, their roots anchoring both soil and memory.
