Special Guest Speaker: Dan Dority
Dan purchased his first aquarium at age 12. Ten years later, he encountered a display tank featuring the then newly introduced Glossolepis incisus—a species not yet available in the hobby. When he discovered these fish originated from Lake Sentani in Indonesia, he was especially intrigued, as he had just accepted a position as a Professor of Theology in Indonesia and was preparing to move there with his young family. He made it a personal goal to one day collect these fish himself.
In 1999, Dan led an expedition that resulted in the discovery of what is now known as Glossolepis dorityi. Since then, he has collected several previously undescribed species of rainbowfish from various locations throughout Indonesia, as well as native species in Papua New Guinea and Laos.
From 2017–2021, Dan lived in Australia, where he was actively involved with the Australia New Guinea Fish Association (ANGFA). During that time, he participated in numerous aquatic collecting trips in the Northern Territory, both with local enthusiasts and in collaboration with the Fish Curator of the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory.
Dan’s unique experiences have led to speaking invitations from aquarium clubs across the United States, Canada, Australia, and Germany.
Although he has never stayed in one place long enough to maintain a large number of aquariums, Dan has treasured the rare opportunity to be the only person in the world keeping certain newly discovered species. More than fishkeeping itself, he values the adventure of collecting fish and the relationships built with people in the regions where they are found.
