There are many things to consider about the appropriate age to spay or neuter your dog. While many vets recommend spaying / neutering at 6 months old this is not based on health but on population control.
I recommend waiting until the dog is two years old. There are a number of reasons for this.
Their growth plates have closed and they have reached full physical maturity.
Some of the main reasons are the decreased risk of orthopedic dysplasia and cruciate ligament tears and post spay/neuter incontinence .
In addition, the greater decrease and risk of the big three cancers - Osteosarcoma, Hemangiosarcoma Lymphoma and even Mast Cell tumors. There are other option to eliminating the risk of accidental breeding , such as a Vasectomy for males and an O***y Sparing Spay for females . These retain their hormones , and can be done at any age.
Here are some great studies and articles that explain this more thoroughly.
