Welcome our new little buddies, Winnie the Pooh and Paddington Bear!

Winnie the Pooh and his brother, Paddington Bear, were born in a boarding kennel, where they spent much of their early lives sleeping on a concrete floor. During that time, they had non-contagious demodectic mange that went untreated, resulting in some hair loss and skin irritation. Thankfully, they are both doing great now are ready to find their forever homes! These boys are 4 months old and are expected to be medium in size (30lbs) and are as sweet as can be. Applications are on our website SunnySkysShelter.org.

MEET FIONA!

Our beautiful Fiona is a lovely little lady! She has spent her whole life in the same home and unfortunately to no fault of her own, is in search of a new one. Understandably, this is a big change for her. She settled in with us fairly quickly but would benefit from someone who will treat her with patience as she adapts into her new life. She is a sweet kitty with a whole lot of love to give! She enjoys being pet and showered with affection. She loves to chat about her day and tell you all about it. Fiona would love a quiet, calmer home where she can live out her next chapter as the princess she is. She does not seem to be fond of the other kitties here and would do best as the only kitty in her kingdom.

As 2025 comes to a close, we’d like to share an adoption update on a fun little pup named Rocky.
“Hi All at Sunny Sky's. Rocky just finished his first Christmas with us and Oh what fun we had. Rocky is such a happy dog always aiming to please for a little love. He has been a very patient pup especially around our autistic granddaughter, he gives her snuggles and she has learned to be gentle in trade for his understanding.

I have include two photos; one is after being groomed, just before Christmas. The groomer takes pictures after each grooming and yes it's real not AI. The other photo is Rocky showing off his new Christmas sweater, he seems to enjoy wearing it.

Looking forward to a great 2026 with Rocky and wondering what new and exciting adventures we can enjoy together.

Happy New Year, we wish you all the best in 2026.”

MEET LOUIE!

This handsome gentleman is ready for a fresh start. He used to have a place to call home until he was tossed outside and left to fend for himself. In search of food, he came across a nice lady who offered him food and gained his trust. He quickly claimed her porch as his safe haven and was spoiled with beds. blankets, and a cat house. He loved to follow her around the yard while she did yard work and eagerly waited for her by the door each morning. Louie was desperate for love and would spend his evenings looking in through the glass door. He loves attention, being held, and headbutting you with affection. He is good with other friendly cats and never put up a fight if neighborhood cats tried to take his food - he even allowed raccoons and possums to venture onto his porch, quietly observing from a distance. It became evident he didn't have a home any longer when he could be found on the porch all hours of the day and night. Louie is now safe and warm and loving every bit of it. No longer having to fend for himself, he is eager to find a place to call home and a family to adore him. He sure is a good boy! He does well with respectful kids over the age of 5.

Our Story

It was 1999 when Dr. Illina Berton began practicing veterinary medicine on East Main Avenue. Her passion for animals had been a constant throughout her life, and for the next ten years the staff of the animal hospital were frequently involved with rescue. But in 2009 Dr. Berton knew she wanted to do more. After seeing a dog named Spike online, she drove to Southern California. Spike was due to be euthanized for minor medical issues. She knew she could help. When she arrived to the shelter, her world was forever changed. Seeing the perfectly adoptable dogs being euthanized due to overcrowding, she decided to dedicate her life to saving them. Dr. Berton adopted Spike, who became nicknamed "Sunny Sky" as his gloomy days were far behind him, and soon there would be sunny skies for thousands of ill fated animals. It only seemed fitting to name our shelter after the dog who inspired what is now known as Sunny Sky's Animal Rescue & Hospital.

In 2010, Sunny Sky's Animal Rescue, a 501(c)3 Non Profit Organization was founded as Dr. Berton converted her practice into a shelter. Together the team fundraised to purchase an old city bus that cost $5,500. February 27th of 2010, the team made the 17 hour journey to the East Valley Shelter in Van Nuys and packed the bus with over 40 dogs, and drove them to safety. It was a success! With an abundance of adopters in Northern Washington, people were eager to rescue the dogs saved by the Rescue Bus. Many trips were made, and hundreds of dogs and cats were saved from overcrowded shelters. Taking advantage of the unique opportunity of having a dedicated veterinarian, the rescue was able to take on dogs and cats who needed medical care no one else was able to provide. As the shelter grew, the demand for dogs and cats in Washington grew with it.

One gloomy day, the rescue bus hit a pothole on the freeway and was irreparably damaged. It was time to retire the bus and search for other means of transportation. Soon Sunny Sky's was partnering with other non-profits and shelters willing to transport the dogs to them, by land and by air. There was never a day the shelter would go empty.

The community of Puyallup began to know the rescue as safe haven for all, often bringing many injured, homeless animals to Dr. Berton as they knew she would do her best to save them. Whether it be a goat, a pig, a turkey or crow, we've seen it all!
