TD Dog Training Helping dogs and their owners live better lives

08/13/2025

🚨 Did you know? According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), 59% of dogs in the U.S. are overweight or obese. Honestly, I think it’s even higher—many vets don’t want to hurt feelings, so they say “your dog looks good” when it’s really 5+ pounds overweight.

We don’t move enough anymore… and neither do our dogs.
So here’s your challenge: This weekend, take your dog for a solid 2–3 mile hike. Find an environment that is suitable to your dog's temperament and training where they can relax and breathe.

And while we’re on the topic—off leash dogs live their best lives. I saw something the other day that hit me hard:

If a dog lives 10 years, that’s just 10 summers.

Only 10.
My dogs spend theirs ripping through fields and exploring the woods, free and joyful, because we’ve put in the work for reliable off leash obedience.

💡 Make the most of the summers you have together. Move more. Train more. Give your dog the freedom to live fully.

Dogs are experts at reading your body language and emotions.
If you’re anxious, frustrated, or rushed—your dog picks up on it. Calm, confident leadership helps your dog feel safe and understand what you want.

🧘‍♂️ Breathe. Relax. Be clear. Your dog is always watching.

Good socialization means calm exposure to all kinds of experiences.
Think: elevators, loud noises, vet visits, slippery floors, wheelchairs, kids, and yes—dogs from a distance too.

👀 Your dog doesn’t need to greet everyone. They need to feel safe and neutral in the presence of new things.

🔁 Early, controlled exposure = confident adult dogs.

Your dog sitting at home doesn’t mean they’ll sit at the park.
Distractions matter! Practice skills in multiple locations, with different people and environments.

🎯 Start small: front yard → driveway → park → busy street.

📲 Ready to take your dog’s skills from your kitchen to the real world? I can help.

Meet Max, an 18-month-old golden retriever who started training with a long list of challenges—jumping, pulling, refusing to walk, counter surfing, chewing everything in sight, and chasing the cat. His owners couldn’t have guests over and had to keep him restricted to one part of the house because he was simply too much to handle.

Fast forward to today: Max is off-leash trained, walks beautifully, and has full freedom in the house. No more destruction, no more chaos. His owners say he’s a completely different dog—and it shows.

Real training. Real results.

Puppy biting is normal — but how you respond matters.

🚫 What makes it worse:
• Rough play
• Too much freedom
• Yelling or chasing
• Letting it go too long

✅ What helps:
• Redirect with toy
• Use a leash indoors
• Crate for calm reset
• Teach “leave it”

Structure now = easier dog later.

Your dog won’t magically “just chill” at a busy BBQ or café.
Calm behaviors need to be practiced and rewarded—especially in real-life settings.

🪑 Practice “place” or “settle” commands during calm times at home first. Then slowly introduce distractions. The more your dog rehearses calm, the better they get at it.

Without realizing it, you might be rewarding the behavior you’re trying to fix. 🚩

Watch for these red flags:
❌ Petting when anxious
❌ “It’s OK” while barking
❌ Giving attention when they demand it
❌ Affection after bad behavior
❌ Using their name during a correction

Dogs learn from what you allow — not what you intend.

A structured routine helps your dog feel secure and reduces anxiety.
Predictability builds confidence! Set regular times for meals, walks, potty breaks, and training. Dogs thrive when they know what to expect.

✨ Bonus: When your dog has clear boundaries and routines, they earn more freedom around the house and in public.
