Heat stroke is real. Watch out for tongue spooning. Keep walks short and bring cool water. Stop frequently. Choose shade. And if heat is very intense (like today) and your dog is a brachysephalic breed (short muzzle / flat face) just avoid going outside and stay in air conditioning or in front of fans as much as possible.

“The Dog” by Francisco Goya (1820-23)

Goya has always been one of my favorite painters. I first saw his painting, “The Third of May 1808” when I was a teenager, and to this day I recall the sinking feeling it put in my stomach. I was transfixed and horrified. It was the first painting I had ever seen that touched me on a deeply emotional level. I remember not so much looking at it, but staring at it and contemplating humanity, war, rebellion, and the cold hearted murder that humans are capable of, especially in times of war. This painting and other works by Goya really impacted me, and I even wrote a university entrance essay on Goya.

This piece, “The Dog” was painted on a wall which was eventually removed, framed, and hung in the Museo Nacional del Prado in Spain.
