Excellent post ! I offer a 30 minute call to discuss the right breed for your family and lifestyle.

𝙎𝙦𝙪𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙥𝙚𝙜𝙨, 𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙚𝙨…

One of the hardest things I see as a dog trainer is a profound mismatch between a dog and the home they find themselves in. Because that's not something training alone can 'fix'.

• An untrained, strong adolescent dog re-homed to an elderly owner with mobility issues.
• Two high-energy, working-breed puppies sold to a first-time owner with two young children.
• A household with free-roaming small animals choosing a terrier to join the family.

These are all real situations. In every case, the dogs were loved. And in the right homes every one of them could have thrived. But they were all struggling - not because they were “bad dogs” or because their owners weren't trying, but because there was a fundamental mismatch between the dogs’ needs and what their homes, however well-intentioned, could realistically provide.

There was nothing wrong with the dogs. And nothing wrong with the people. They just weren’t the right fit for each other. And the fallout of that mismatch was heartbreaking for everyone involved.

Choosing the right dog for your lifestyle, experience and capacity is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make as a dog owner. When there’s a mismatch, you can end up spending years trying to make a square peg fit a round hole - and that's hard and dispiriting for everyone.

So when choosing a dog -

• Forget appearances
• Forget the breed you’ve always loved
• Forget what you’ve “always had before”

Use your head rather than your heart, and ask yourself - honestly - whether you are truly a good match for the specific dog you’re considering. And if you’re not, have a re-think. There are countless dogs out there who 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 be a better fit.

It's not failure to admit you're not the right home for a dog. It’s wisdom. Sometimes the best choice is a different one.

They were never designed for everything, yet that's exactly how we tend to use them.
A dog's name was never meant to cover every moment, emotion and situation throughout the day.
They aren't instructions, solutions or a shortcut to understanding, but that's how we start to rely on them.

Often their names will become a background blur. It won't stand out and loses its relevance. sometimes it can even mean emotional pressure or cause anxiety because of how we have used it.

How many times a day do you say your dog's name?
Ten?
Maybe twenty?
Chances are it's much higher because it's subconscious and we also tend to just add it in here and there.
That adds up to a lot.
Suddenly, they're ignoring it completely.

Have a look at some old videos, listen and count how many times you may have said their name.
You may be very surprised.

Names tend to work best when they stand out and don't carry an expectation or instruction.
Their names have been stretched too thin, but the good news is, the less we use them the more "elastic" they can become again.

They'll quickly bounce back, if we stop the overuse.

New Year’s Eve is around the corner and for most of us we stay home and comfort our dogs . Please be kind and make sure your dogs are inside and secure in your home . Lots of helpful hints in this graph .

BOOMS AND BANGS
THOSE DREADED FIREWORKS!

I’ll be spending New Year’s Eve at home, in my pajamas, cuddled up with my dogs, as I always do.

Personally, I detest fireworks. Not only are they terrifying for so many different animals, but are also dreaded by many people, who have to watch, often helplessly as their dog suffers the trauma of the deafening, relentless bangs, all because of fleeting human entertainment.

Shelters become overrun with lost dogs, dogs are knocked over by cars or go missing in their attempt to escape, they jump through glass windows, over high walls, have heart attacks, seizures or worse.

As there’s very little we can do to prevent other people from doing what they do, the best solution is to do all we can to minimize the impact this has on our dogs.

All dogs are different and there’s never a guarantee that any of these methods will work, but we owe it to our dogs to try and make it better.
