Hand-feeding treats feels sweet, right up until your horse starts mugging you for them.

Young horses explore everything with their mouths. Feed them by hand enough and they learn that people are treat dispensers, and a pushy, nippy 1,000-pound animal is a hard habit to undo.

Morgan, a trainer at Colorado Horse Rescue, gets around it by loading the treats into the Luna Ring and Clover instead. The horse still gets the reward and the enrichment, just not from your hands. Good manners and a busy brain at the same time.

The horses at a rescue are about as hard on a toy as it gets.

Green, anxious youngsters, all teeth and energy, none of them broken in gently. A toy that survives that crowd will survive whatever your horse does to it.

A horse toy has to pass two tests, and most only pass one.

It either survives the abuse but bores him by day two, or holds his interest right up until it cracks in a week. Either way, you're back to buying another.

The Luna Ring passes both. The natural rubber takes the beating, and loading it with treats is what keeps him coming back to it, stall days especially. Tough enough to last, interesting enough that he doesn't quit on it.
