On June 7 & 8, JCHC's final grant class, Trailer Safety & Skills Course, took place. Typically, a one-day class, there were enough interested folks that Code3 Associates agreed to teach a second class. It began in the classroom, where participants learned and discussed basic trailer driving safety, including braking time and distance, ensuring the correct tires, properly calibrating the trailer brakes, using the proper hitch, and the proper load distribution.
The class then went outside to inspect their trucks and trailers against a safety checklist with items that covered 'bent, broken, cracked?' for metal/plastics, and looking for 'abrasions, bumps, cuts?' on belts & hoses. Trailer doors, floors, tires, and wires were examined, and items in need of repair/replacement were called out.
Next - the Skills Course! Where participants practiced and then tested on to earn their Trailer Safety & Skills Course certificates. The course included pulling up and backing up, pulling up and offset backing (two parallel lanes of cones), backing into a loading dock, and parallel parking. The instructors also helped participants learn how to calibrate their braking systems while driving.
There were many 'ah-ha' moments!
Grab some cones, hook up your trailer, and head to a vacant parking lot to sharpen your trailer driving skills!

Exciting news! Governor Polis signed the Equestrian Protection Bill Into law on May 28, 2025. The bill, sponsored by Senator Lindsey Daugherty and Representative Lisa Feret, aims to enhance protections and recognition for equestrians in Colorado by establishing a comprehensive framework for their safety and infrastructure needs. Thanks to Community Equestrian, Michele Hovet, Fran Evers, Karen Hersh, and other devoted equestrian advocates and community partners for their efforts with this initiative.

On May 31, the Jefferson County Horse Council, in cooperation with the Jeffco Mounted Patrol, held a "Get your horse ready for the trail" clinic. Participants were able to introduce their equine partners to several different 'scary' things, such as dogs, strollers, people on bikes, bridges, trash, balloons, water crossing, a drone, and more. Trainers from the mounted patrol and Harmony Equine were available to provide assistance to riders and their horses.
The clinic was well-received, and was a great way to build confidence in both horse and rider.

Important Survey~ Input due by June 6, 2025.
Several cities, counties, and now Colorado Parks & Wildlife have been reevaluating their future plans and determining how to utilize trails, open spaces, and other areas under their jurisdiction, based on public input. Please stay informed and be involved. If equestrians do not speak up, we will be (and often are) left out of the discussion and future decisions of what happens to our trails, open space, access, and who is allowed to use the areas we enjoy.
Please follow the link to CPW's 10-year strategic plan feedback form, and keep equestrians part of the conversation in Colorado.
