We will update you on how to access your records once we have processes in place.

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of you for your continued support and trust in us over the past few years. Your loyalty has meant the world to us, and we are truly grateful for the opportunity to serve you and your pets.

Remember, laughter is the best medicine, so share some pets to spread some smiles!!

We all want our furry friends to be happy and healthy, and a Fear Free approach to exercise is a fantastic way to achieve that! Did you know that regular exercise can significantly reduce your petโ€™s Fear, Anxiety, and Stress (FAS) levels? Hereโ€™s how:

1. Stress Relief: Regular physical activity helps release pent-up energy and tension, leading to calmer and more relaxed pets. Exercise acts as a natural stress reliever, reducing anxiety and promoting overall well-being.

2. Mental Stimulation: Engaging in various exercises stimulates your petโ€™s mind, keeping them mentally sharp and focused. Activities like puzzle toys, agility training, and interactive play can reduce boredom and associated stress behaviors.

3. Routine and Predictability: Establishing a consistent exercise routine provides pets with a sense of predictability and security. Knowing what to expect can significantly lower their FAS levels and create a stable environment.

4. Bonding Time: Exercise is an excellent opportunity to strengthen the bond between you and your pet. Positive interactions during playtime build trust and reduce fear, making your pet feel safe and loved.

5. Improved Behavior: Regular exercise can help alleviate behavioral issues often linked to stress and anxiety, such as excessive barking, chewing, or aggression. A tired pet is a happy and well-behaved pet!

6. Boosted Confidence: Successfully completing physical activities and challenges boosts your petโ€™s confidence. This newfound confidence can translate to other aspects of their life, reducing overall FAS.

Remember, a Fear Free approach to exercise means keeping it positive, fun, and stress-free for your pet. Letโ€™s embrace this holistic approach to improve our petsโ€™ mental and physical health, making them happier and more content!

We work to accommodate each pet as much as possible to create a Fear Free experience at our facility, so schedule an appointment today at CPH.vet or call us at 303-277-0281!

These two conditions are the result of calcium being deposited within the skin. These conditions are uncommon in dogs and rare in cats, but our facility recently had the opportunity to remove one of these masses from a patient.

Calcinosis circumscripta is the deposition of calcium, usually at bony prominences or in the footpads and mouth. Pets with calcinosis circumscripta will usually only have a single lesion in these areas.

Calcinosis cutis occurs in susceptible pets in areas where local skin damage has occurred. Calcinosis cutis has two forms, dystrophic and metastatic. Dystrophic occurs when calcium levels in the blood are normal, but calcium salts are deposited in damaged tissues.

Metastatic occurs when calcium levels in the blood are elevated and calcium is deposited in locally damaged tissues. Metastatic calcinosis cutis is most often caused by the overproduction of corticosteroids, a type of hormone produced by the adrenal glands.

Pets with calcinosis cutis typically have lesions (papules or plaques) with a gritty rough surface which can ulcerate and discharge chalky material or pus.
Diagnosis of these two conditions usually come from blood tests or biopsies after lesions have been discovered.

In the case of calcinosis circumscripta, surgical removal of lesions is typically curative. Recurrence of calcinosis circumscripta after surgery does not tend to occur.

Treatment of calcinosis cutis is often based on the underlying causes of the condition and a patient's prognosis usually depends on the resolution of the underlying cause.

This is only part of the reason it is so important to have any unusual lumps, bumps, or skin issues checked out by your veterinarian. If your pet seems to have skin issues or an unusual lump, call us today at 303-277-0281 to schedule an appointment.

Veterinary offices can be incredibly scary which can increase a pet's Fear, Anxiety, and Stress (FAS). There are scents from other animals, scents of cleaning chemicals, strange people, a new environment, and they're potentially being poked and prodded. So what happens when we can perform some of those tasks in an environment where the pet is more comfortable and familiar with?

Not all treatment has to happen in an exam room (a scary enclosed space) or on an exam table (an uncomfortably high position). In fact, some veterinarians can even come to your house to provide necessary care. While this isn't a service our facility offers right now, we work to accommodate every animal however we can.

Part of being Fear Free is reducing FAS in which ever ways are feasibly possible. Inevitably, there will be some treatments that have to occur inside the facility or on a treatment table. For many treatments though, there are no rules on where it has to occur, so we can let the pet dictate where they are most comfortable. Even if that means in a car, in our lobby, or with the staff laying on the ground playing vet tech twister to get the pet in a comfortable position, then that is what we will do.

We work to accommodate each pet as much as possible to create a Fear Free experience at our facility, so schedule an appointment today at CPH.vet or call us at 303-277-0281!

Meet Frank: A Tale of Tenacity and Top-notch Care!

Frank, a 6-year-old Lab Mix, came to us with a puzzling lump on his leg. This lump fluctuated in size, raising concerns for his owners. They decided to bring him to our facility for an evaluation and possible removal.

Upon initial examination, the cytology of the mass showed a few abnormal cells but lacked many signs of a serious issue. We successfully removed the lump and sent it to the lab for a histological diagnosis.

The lab results revealed the lump was benign, caused by a chronic, deep-tissue infection, which we had completely excised. However, during his recovery, Frank's wound exhibited persistent infection signs, including inflammation, swelling, and discharge, despite being on a strong antibiotic.

To tackle this, we switched to a different class of antibiotics. Surprisingly, the infection persisted, prompting us to seek further answers. We cultured the infection by collecting a swab and sending it to the lab.

Culturing involves applying the swab to a growth medium that encourages the growth of bacterial and fungal colonies if present. Once the colonies grow sufficiently, various chemicals or antibiotics are tested to determine their effectiveness.

Frank's culture results identified a stubborn bacteria resistant to three commonly prescribed antibiotics. Fortunately, it was susceptible to another antibiotic we had on hand. Frank will be on a high dosage of this antibiotic for 3 to 6 weeks to ensure complete eradication of the infection.

Weโ€™re here to help with even the most specific diagnostics your pet might need. Our in-house lab, along with a full range of diagnostic tools through our outside laboratory, ensures we can handle even the trickiest cases.

We are available via phone call or text at 303-277-0281 to answer any questions you may have! You can also visit us at cph.vet to book your consultation completely online!

The Fourth of July Holiday is NEXT WEEK!

Between the fireworks, parties, parades, unexpected guests, expected guests, loud sounds, and bright lights, the Fourth of July celebrations can be terrifying for your pet.

There are steps you can take to help keep your pet safe and calm during these stressful situations. Train your pet to go to a safe, comfortable, interior room with no windows on command, ensuring they have a retreat during scary noises.

Avoid exacerbating the problem by overreacting to your pet's behavior. Remain calm and distract your pet with treats, toys, or playtime. Playing soft, calming music can help drown out frightening sounds, and using an anti-anxiety shirt or snugly fitted t-shirt can provide consistent pressure to reduce their heart rate and help them feel calmer.

Lastly, consider anti-anxiety medications. Don't hesitate to talk to your veterinarian about short-term or long-term options for your pet. They may need an extra helping hand to manage their fears, and that's perfectly okay.

With the Fourth of July next week, now is the time to schedule an appointment to discuss Fear Free Medications for noise aversion if your pet needs them. Don't wait until the last minute!! Call us at 303-277-0281 to schedule an appointment today!

Nail trims can often cause an increase in Fear, Anxiety, and Stress (FAS), so today, we're going to give you tips on how to make nail trims Fear Free at home.
Success is best achieved with patience; take is SLOW! Stress free body handling, body positioning, and paw target training are important steps when training your pet to have their nails trimmed.

First, pick a quiet spot for the nail trim. Once your pet is comfortable with the general area, work on making them comfortable in the position that you would like them in. Whether it's on a table, using a "Down" or "Lay" commands, or on a sofa even, take time to acclimate them.

Next, you'll train paw target behavior (or when a pet touches an object on command). In order to do this, you can start with a basic "Shake" or "Paw" trick and then move towards having your pet touch different objects, including the nail clippers. By encouraging your pet to touch the nail clippers, the interaction is their choice and it becomes less scary. This step may take time as you slowly acclimate them to the clippers (NEVER force your pet!).

Lastly we progress to actually trimming the nails. This make take multiple sessions and that's okay. Remember, we want to set the dog up for success and our goal is low stress.

Visit FearFreeHappyHomes.com and search nail trims for videos, pictures, blogs, podcasts and more.

If this still doesn't work, there are other options. Looking into a certified groomer or a specialized veterinary trainer/behaviorist can be beneficial as they have specific training and experience.

In the worst case scenarios, your pet may need to be sedated for nail trims. While this is never the ideal goal, if it is necessary for your pet, we are here to help. Schedule an appointment today at CPH.vet or call us at 303-277-0281!
