Empty and quiet. The one part of motherhood I never anticipated or thought about until I had older children.
The emptiness and stillness after everyone leaves.
I waited and waited and counted the days until everyone was here for Thanksgiving.
They came. The house was full. My heart was even fuller. It nearly burst with joy.
Then, just like that. It’s over. It’s quiet. The seats are empty again.
When they’re little, you just want a quiet house. When they’re older, the loud sounds of laughing and carrying on is everything.
Strange how that works, isn’t it?
It’s just the way life is, I guess.
I’m so grateful to have this though. To have young adult kids that I want to spend time with. I enjoy them. I like them and not just love them. It’s a gift for sure.
As I sit in the quiet right now, I will wipe the tears and anticipate the next time we are all together under one roof, knowing that even though it’s not an everyday occurrence anymore, the times we have are special.
Life is truly a gift. People are the greatest gifts. Thank you, Lord for a house that’s full and even when it’s empty, I carry them in my heart.
