GREAT NEWS! Jody Spangler (yes, her legal name is Joan) has now qualified for the National Kidney Registry! Let me share a few facts about organ donation that I have learned:
1) Did you know that some fundraising is required by some of the support organizations? Kind of makes sense since it’s a very expensive surgery and many items needed are not covered by insurance. We are so appreciative of Help Hope Live in Radnor and the Transplant Alliance Foundation in Pottstown. And now the NKF.
2) Did you know that when working with these organization, the person in need is not allowed to directly ask anyone to donate? They are allowed to ask them to “consider” donating, and they are allowed to hand them a card created by the support foundations. We now have cards to hand out. This rule is in place so that people dont feel obligated to donate or feel bad that they didn’t. It’s too big a decision both physically and emotionally.
3) Did you know that the person of need knows nothing about who has called, asked about, or committed to testing to see if theyre a match? Even the actual donor of an organ may be confidential. All of this is in the hands of the donor.
