Welcome Sullivan to the DLRR family! 🖤

Sullivan is an 8-year-old purebred black Labrador Retriever who recently joined rescue after his family made the difficult decision to find him a home better suited to his needs. With a young child at home and changing family circumstances, Sullivan wasn't getting the activity and attention he deserves.

This handsome boy is house-trained, crate-trained, trustworthy in the home, and wonderful with children. Weighing in at 80–90 pounds, Sullivan is a friendly, energetic Lab who loves people and is ready for a fresh start.

Sullivan is currently settling in at boarding while we learn more about him and help him transition into rescue life. He has a veterinary appointment scheduled for his neuter, vaccines, microchip, and wellness exam.

We're excited to have Sullivan safe with DLRR and look forward to sharing updates as we get to know this sweet boy better.

Sullivan is not yet available for adoption. To learn more about DLRR and our adoption process, visit www.dlrraz.org/adopt.

Coal is Adopted!

Coal met Pam and Jay, along with their 4-year-old rescue Puggle, Zoey. The introduction started at Mama Bears so the dogs could meet on neutral ground, and Coal was his usual sweet self, giving Zoey plenty of space to get comfortable.

Afterward, everyone headed back to their home where the dogs spent time together in their beautiful backyard by the pool. Coal showed little interest in the water for now, but Pam and Jay are hopeful he will eventually discover a love for swimming.

Inside the house, Coal soaked up all the treats, love, and attention they gave him. Pam and Jay have previously owned several Labs and Goldens and have deeply missed having one in their home since losing their last dog.

Pam is absolutely over the moon for him! When Coal saw them again, he was clearly excited, while Zoey happily stepped in to show him around the house once more. Coal was showering Pam with kisses so much she could barely sign the adoption papers!

Pam and Jay even canceled their upcoming California trip so they could stay home to help Coal acclimate and begin training so he can become his very best self. They own a grill with a dog-friendly patio, so once Coal settles in, he’ll get to enjoy lots of outings and adventures with them.

We are so happy this sweet, deserving boy is finally home.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in getting Coal to DLRR and to everyone who played a part in his care and journey.

Happy life, Coal! 🖤🐾

We wanted to share an update with you about Marley. On June 22, it will be two years since he joined our family.

Marley came to us at about 3 years old, very scared and shy. We knew he had come from a home with senior citizen owners, and we quickly realized we had some work to do. He loved going on walks, but needed much more training than we expected. His prey drive was very high, and honestly, everything seemed to overstimulate him — noises, rustling leaves, shadows, cars, and especially small animals.

We started with shorter walks, lots of calm reassurance, frequent stops for praise, and patience. I even made another loop in the leash for my second hand because if Marley spotted a live animal, he could nearly pull my shoulder out chasing after it! Over time, with lots of walks, calm talk, and encouragement, Marley learned how to walk beautifully on leash without darting after every small animal. When he is safely off leash, he still enjoys the thrill of chasing rabbits. At home, he mostly ignores the chicken coop unless something disturbs the chickens — then he immediately goes into watchdog mode.

Marley can now sleep through the early morning trash truck and the mailman. He still alerts us when Amazon arrives because they come a little too close to the door for his liking, but we can’t fault him for being such a good guard dog.

As for walks, Marley loves them so much that we now walk about four miles a day. Dog parks are okay, although it takes him some time to warm up. He tends to shy away from aggressive dogs and prefers friendly retrievers, but honestly, he would rather just enjoy his long walks.

And toys — Marley is unlike any other Lab we have ever known. He proudly brings us his stuffies when we come home and carries them around the house, but he does NOT chew them, shred them, or even desqueak them. Truly unheard of for a Lab, but wonderful for our toy budget!

He definitely eats like a Lab now too, barely stopping to breathe between bites. When he first arrived two years ago, he barely ate at all. He stays lean for a Lab, not overweight in the slightest. He is also the best kitchen helper because he is always nearby supervising food prep and sitting close during meals, hoping for carrots or apple slices.

I call him my chocolate shadow because he follows me everywhere. The second I sit down, he is ready to nap because he has spent the day following me from room to room. When my mother-in-law visits, Marley happily keeps her company while the rest of the house is at work or school. He will even jump in bed with the last person still sleeping if given the chance.

Last weekend, we hosted about 50 people for a graduation open house in our backyard, and Marley did amazing. We had no worries whatsoever. He greeted everyone, wandered through the party making friends, and always made sure he knew where mom was. By the end of the night, he was completely exhausted from all the excitement and missed naps.

We are so proud of the good boy Marley has become. We are so thankful we had the patience to help him grow into the dog he was always meant to be. The “good boy” was in him all along.

Here he is with his family and the graduate. Thank you, DLRR, Amber and Family

Kane (2) is now HOME. ❤️

When Kane was returned to DLRR, Julie and her family welcomed him back into foster care. Kane was actually Julie’s very first foster when she began fostering with us in 2025, making this reunion even more special.

This week, Julie officially foster failed with Kane, and we could not be happier for all of them. Kane is thrilled to be back home with his family and also has another buddy to enjoy life with — Daisy. ❤️

Kane did gain 25 pounds while with his previous adopter, but Julie is dedicated to helping him safely get back to a healthy weight with lots of love, exercise, and care.

Congratulations to Julie and family and to Kane for finally finding his forever home! 🐾
